Buying Guide

Selecting a Cold Welder by Wire Diameter

The full SGT capacity chart, from a 0.05 mm hand welder to a 25 mm aluminium rod press, with the machine that covers each band.

Start With the Wire Not the Machine

Every machine in the range is defined by the wire it takes, and the aluminium range is always wider than the copper range because aluminium upsets at lower pressure. Find your largest and smallest wire diameter first, then read the chart below. If both sizes do not fall inside one machine, it is usually cheaper to buy two machines than to run one of them outside its band.

0.05 mm to 0.50 mm

The PW10 hand-held welder at 820 g covers 0.05-0.50 mm in copper and aluminium, and is the only machine in the range that reaches 0.05 mm. The PB10 covers 0.12-0.50 mm in a 160 mm frame. The DA10 covers 0.10-0.50 mm as a desk machine at 3.3-3.5 kg. All of them take SD1 single cavity dies.

0.30 mm to 1.40 mm

The PA30 portable covers 0.30-0.90 mm at 1.30 kg. The PB35 portable covers copper 0.35-1.30 mm and aluminium 0.35-1.50 mm at 3.5 kg. The DA30 desk machine covers copper 0.30-1.20 mm at 10 kg in cast steel; the DB30 covers 0.30-1.30 mm at 13 kg in ductile cast iron. All take SD2 double cavity dies.

1.00 mm to 4.50 mm

The DA100 covers copper 1.00-3.25 mm and aluminium 1.00-5.00 mm at 37 kg. The DB100 covers copper 0.90-4.00 mm and aluminium 1.00-5.50 mm at 36 kg. The DJ100 goes furthest by hand, copper 1.00-4.50 mm and aluminium 1.00-6.00 mm at 80 kg with larger dies. Double cavity dies are available up to 2.50 mm on the DA100 and DB100.

1.00 mm to 25.00 mm Hydraulic

The CHY100 covers copper 1.00-4.00 mm at 130 kg and 0.75 kW. The CHY200 covers 2.00-5.00 mm and is designed for rectangular strip; the CHY200-B carries copper to 6.00 mm. The CHY400 covers copper to 8.00 mm and aluminium to 15.00 mm; the CHY400-B covers copper to 9.00 mm at 3P 380 V 50 Hz. The CHY700 covers copper to 13.00 mm and aluminium to 25.00 mm at 1780 kg, and the CHY800 takes copper rod to 20.00 mm and aluminium rod to 25.00 mm as a two-part machine.

Rectangular and Profile Sections

The CHY200 and CHY400 are designed for rectangular strip as well as wire. On the other machines, other sections such as rectangular wire are subject to evaluation. In all cases the range for rectangular non-ferrous wire is calculated according to the cross-sectional area, so send the profile dimensions rather than a nominal size.

Then Specify the Dies

The machine sets the band; the die sets the size. Dies are manufactured for wire between 0.10 mm and 25.0 mm, round or profile, to the customer's specification, and are held to -1% / +2% of the wire diameter.

FAQ

Questions About This Guide

Is the data in this article from SGT's own specifications

Yes. Every figure quoted here appears in SGT's published product data, capacity tables or comparison charts for the equipment described.

Who should read this

Engineers and buyers specifying buying equipment for wire and cable production, wire drawing or conductor jointing.

How do we get a recommendation for our own line

Send the wire material, the diameter range, the section shape and your electrical supply. Those four answers are enough to name the machine and the die set.

Are the products described available now

All 38 products in the SGT catalogue are current production. The product pages carry the published dimensions, weights and capacities for each one.

Apply This to Your Own Line

Send the wire sizes and the machines you already run. The answer names the model, the die set and what to change first.
