Overview

What This Machine Does

The BL1224 is a bench lathe built around a gap bed, which is what lets a small machine take a disc or flange far larger than its 305mm swing over the bed would otherwise allow. Swing over the carriage is 173mm and swing in the gap is 440mm. The V-way bedways are induction hardened and ground, and the machine is engineered from high grade casting, so a bench-sized lathe still holds its geometry under load. The headstock is belt driven, which keeps it quiet and simple, giving 12 speed steps from 50 to 1200 r.p.m. through an MT5 spindle with a 36mm diameter. Threading covers 15 kinds of metric thread from 0.25 to 7.5mm and 40 kinds of inch thread from 4 to 112 T.P.I., and feeds run 0.12 to 0.42mm per revolution. Cross and longitudinal feeds interlock so both cannot be engaged at once, and an inching switch is provided for test running. Motor power is 1.1KW with a 0.04KW coolant pump.

Key Benefits

Why Buyers Choose This Machine

  • Gap bed swings 440mm so large flanges and discs can be machined on a bench lathe
  • V-way bedways induction hardened and ground so the carriage keeps its alignment
  • 12 speed steps from 50 to 1200 r.p.m. give slow speeds for large diameters and threading
  • 15 metric threads from 0.25 to 7.5mm and 40 inch threads from 4 to 112 T.P.I.
  • Cross and longitudinal interlocking feed prevents both feeds being engaged together
  • Inching switch allows a safe test run before committing to a cut
  • Belt-driven headstock runs quietly and is simple to maintain
  • Coolant motor fitted so the machine is ready for coolant-fed cutting
Application

Where Universal Desktop Lathe Machine BL1224 Earns Its Place

Problems It Solves

  • Large diameter flanges will not clear a plain bed on a bench-sized lathe
  • Unhardened bedways wear near the chuck and the lathe loses accuracy
  • Engaging cross and longitudinal feed together crashes the tool on machines without an interlock
  • Starting a cut without a test run risks a crash when the setup is not verified
  • Repair threads in both metric and inch cannot be cut on a single-system machine
  • Dry cutting shortens tool life on steel work

Who It Is For

  • Maintenance workshops making and repairing their own parts
  • Small machine shops needing gap bed capacity in a bench footprint
  • Technical schools and training centres
  • Distributors supplying bench lathes in export markets

Application Scenarios

  • Turning a large flange or pulley in the gap that would not clear the bed
  • Cutting metric or inch threads on repair components
  • General shaft and bush turning up to 530mm between centres
  • Training work in a technical school where safety interlocks matter
  • Small batch turned parts in a maintenance workshop
  • Coolant-fed turning of steel components

Comparison

How It Compares With the Alternatives

BV20-1 manual small bench latheThe BV20-1 is lighter with a 220mm swing and six speeds; the BL1224 adds a gap bed to 440mm 12 speeds a coolant pump and a feed interlock
HQ800 multi purpose drilling milling machineThe HQ800 mills and drills as well but the BL1224 is a dedicated lathe, with a gap bed and 40 inch thread pitches for turning work
A full size floor latheA floor lathe needs a machine bay and foundation; the BL1224 gives 440mm gap capacity from a 1420*750*760 mm packing footprint
Use Guide

Running the Machine

Step 1

Install on a solid stand and level the machine before the first cut

Step 2

Remove the gap piece where the workpiece exceeds the 305mm swing over the bed

Step 3

Mount the work and select one of the 12 speeds from 50 to 1200 r.p.m.

Step 4

Use the inching switch to test run the setup before cutting

Step 5

Set a feed between 0.12 and 0.42mm per revolution

Step 6

Engage either cross or longitudinal feed, the interlock prevents both

Step 7

Select the metric or inch thread from the chart when threading and engage the leadscrew
