Overview

What This Machine Does

These are square column drilling machines, and the box column is the point: it resists the deflection that a round column allows when a 63 or 80 mm drill loads the head. The range runs Z5140A and Z5140B at 40 mm capacity, Z5150A and Z5150B at 50 mm, Z5163B at 63 mm and Z5180B at 80 mm. The 40 and 50 mm machines take 16000 N of feed resistance and 350 N.m of spindle torque with a 335 mm throat; the 63 and 80 mm machines carry 800 N.m of spindle torque with a 375 mm throat. Main motors are rated 3 kW 4 kW 5.5 kW and 7.5 kW by model, with MT4 MT5 and MT6 spindle tapers. Spindle travel is 250 mm throughout and the spindle box hand travel is 200 mm on the 40 and 50 mm machines and 250 mm on the larger ones. A tap automatic reversing device suits tapping of blind and depth-controlled holes, and controls are grouped in one place on the machine.

Key Benefits

Why Buyers Choose This Machine

  • Box column resists head deflection so large diameter holes stay round and on position
  • Six capacities from 40 mm to 80 mm let you buy the drilling power you actually need
  • 800 N.m spindle torque on Z5163B and Z5180B drives 63 and 80 mm drills in solid material
  • Tap automatic reversing device makes blind and depth-limited tapping repeatable
  • Centralised controls keep the operator in one position through a cycle
  • Wide variable speed range so small pilot drills and full capacity drills run on one machine
  • 250 mm of spindle travel across the whole range for deep hole work
Application

Where Box-Type Vertical Drilling Machine Z5140A Z5150A Earns Its Place

Problems It Solves

  • Round column machines flex and wander when the drill diameter goes past 40 mm
  • Blind hole tapping breaks taps when there is no automatic reversal at depth
  • Underpowered heads stall in solid material at 63 and 80 mm diameters
  • Scattered controls slow the operator down on a repeating drilling cycle
  • Sending large hole work out to a boring mill costs time that a drilling machine could absorb

Who It Is For

  • Heavy machine shops drilling above 40 mm
  • Structural steel and pressure vessel fabricators
  • Valve pump and gearbox component manufacturers
  • Maintenance shops handling large castings and weldments
  • Distributors supplying box column drilling machines

Application Scenarios

  • Drilling large bolt holes in heavy plate and structural fabrications
  • Boring and reaming bearing seats on machined housings
  • Tapping blind holes to depth using the automatic reversing device
  • Counter-sinking and spot facing bolt seats on thick flanges
  • Continuous production drilling in a medium or heavy machine shop
  • Rework and repair drilling on large castings in a maintenance shop

Comparison

How It Compares With the Alternatives

Pillar type drilling machines Z5030 to Z5050The round column machines are lighter and tilt the table for angled work; the box column machines are stiffer and carry up to 800 N.m of spindle torque for 63 and 80 mm holes
Radial drilling machineA radial arm reaches across a large workpiece without moving it; the box column machine has a fixed 335 or 375 mm throat but is more rigid for heavy vertical drilling
Boring mill for large holesA boring mill holds tighter tolerance but ties up expensive machine time; the box column drill takes the bulk hole work off it at a much lower cost per hole
Use Guide

Running the Machine

Step 1

Level and anchor the machine and connect the supply to the rated motor power

Step 2

Choose the model whose throat distance reaches your hole position 335 mm or 375 mm

Step 3

Fit the tool in the MT4 MT5 or MT6 spindle for that model

Step 4

Clamp the part firmly to the base table since feed forces reach 16000 N

Step 5

Set the spindle speed and feed for the drill diameter and material

Step 6

Use the manual spindle box travel to set the head height then drill on the 250 mm spindle stroke

Step 7

For blind holes set the automatic tap reversing device to depth before tapping

FAQ

Questions About Box-Type Vertical Drilling Machine Z5140A Z5

What is the difference between the A and B series?

Z5140A and Z5150A are the A series at 40 and 50 mm with 200 mm spindle box travel. The B series adds Z5163B at 63 mm and Z5180B at 80 mm with 375 mm throat 800 N.m spindle torque and 250 mm spindle box travel.

How deep can it drill in one stroke?

Spindle travel is 250 mm on every model. The spindle box travels a further 200 or 250 mm by hand to set the head height for tall parts.

Can it tap blind holes?

Yes. The tap automatic reversing device is intended for tapping of blind and determined depth holes, which is what stops taps bottoming and breaking.

What spindle tooling do I need?

MT4 on Z5140A and Z5140B MT5 on Z5150A Z5150B and Z5163B and MT6 on Z5180B. Tell us your existing tooling and we will confirm sleeves and adaptors.

What power supply does the machine need?

Main motors are 3 kW 4 kW 5.5 kW and 7.5 kW by model. Send us your voltage frequency and phase and we will build the electrical system to match.

How are these machines packed and shipped?

In wooden cases. We confirm case dimensions net weight and gross weight on the proforma invoice and can quote FOB CFR or CIF.

What are your trade and payment terms?

We quote FOB CFR and CIF. Payment is 30 percent by T/T with the order and 70 percent before shipment, or an irrevocable L/C at sight.
