Overview

What This Machine Does

The DM50 and DM100 grind connecting rods and their end faces, which is the operation that comes before a rod big end can be resized. When a rod is reconditioned the cap face has to be ground flat and square so that, once bolted up, the big end bore closes to a true circle again. On the DM100 the grinding head moves longitudinally on a guide screw, and stock removal is set by a handwheel with scales, so the operator reads off how much is coming off rather than guessing. A shim plate under the work allows a small adjustment of the parallelism between the workpiece grinding face and the end face of the grinding wheel, which is what makes it possible to grind the face square rather than tapered. The trailing bar shifts laterally through a gear and rack, so grinding speed across the face can be varied to suit the job. The DM50 is a smaller lighter machine of simple construction, easy to move and operate.

Key Benefits

Why Buyers Choose This Machine

  • Grinds rod and cap end faces flat and square so the big end bore closes round when bolted up
  • Handwheel with scales gives a direct reading of grinding removal rather than a feel for it
  • Guide screw longitudinal head movement keeps the head steady through the pass
  • Adjustable shim plate corrects parallelism between the work face and the wheel end face
  • Gear-rack lateral shift of the trailing bar allows different grinding speeds across the face
  • DM50 is compact light and easy to move for shops without the floor space for a fixed machine
  • Keeps rod reconditioning in-house instead of buying replacement rods
Application

Where Cap and Rod Grinding Machine DM50 Earns Its Place

Problems It Solves

  • A big end bore cannot be brought back round unless the cap faces are ground flat and square first
  • Hand grinding a cap face leaves it tapered and the bore closes oval
  • Without a scaled handwheel the operator cannot control how much material is coming off the cap
  • Buying replacement connecting rods costs far more than reconditioning the ones in the engine
  • Small shops have no floor space for a large dedicated rod machine

Who It Is For

  • Engine rebuilders who resize connecting rod big ends
  • Automotive repair shops reconditioning rods rather than replacing them
  • Agricultural and small plant machinery workshops
  • Distributors equipping compact engine rebuild workshops in export markets

Application Scenarios

  • Grinding cap faces before resizing a connecting rod big end
  • Reconditioning stretched or distorted rods in an engine rebuild shop
  • Grinding rod end faces on car and light commercial engines
  • Small workshop rod work where the machine has to be moved between benches
  • Batch rod preparation ahead of honing the big end bore

Comparison

How It Compares With the Alternatives

Con-rod bushing boring machine T8216 / T8210DThe boring machine handles the small end bush; the DM50 and DM100 grind the cap and rod end faces, which is the big end side of the same rod job
Hand grinding a cap on a bench grinderA bench grinder cannot hold the cap face parallel to the wheel; the shim plate and scaled handwheel on these machines set parallelism and removal deliberately
Replacing connecting rodsGrinding and resizing recovers rods that are otherwise sound, which on a multi-cylinder engine avoids a full set of replacement parts
Use Guide

Running the Machine

Step 1

Split the rod and clean the cap and rod mating faces

Step 2

Clamp the cap or rod with the grinding face presented to the wheel

Step 3

Adjust the shim plate until the work face is parallel to the wheel end face

Step 4

Set the grinding removal on the scaled handwheel

Step 5

Use the gear-rack lateral shift to suit the grinding speed to the job

Step 6

Grind until the face cleans up and check it is flat and square

Step 7

Bolt the rod up and check the big end bore before honing or resizing

FAQ

Questions About Cap and Rod Grinding Machine DM50

What is the difference between DM50 and DM100?

The DM50 is the small size light weight version with simple construction, easy to move and operate. The DM100 is the larger machine with guide screw head movement. Send us the rods you work on and we will confirm which fits.

How is grinding removal controlled?

By a handwheel with scales, so the amount taken off the face is set and read directly rather than judged by feel.

How do I get the cap face square to the wheel?

The shim plate is adjusted slightly to regulate the parallelism between the grinding face of the workpiece and the end face of the grinding wheel.

Does the machine resize the big end bore as well?

No. It grinds the rod and cap faces. The bore is then resized on a separate operation, which is why the face grinding has to be flat and square.

What grinding wheel does it use?

Wheel specification depends on your rod material. Tell us what you are grinding and we will quote a suitable wheel with the machine.

How is the machine packed and shipped?

Crated for sea freight, with fumigated timber where your import rules require it. Send us your destination port for an FOB CFR or CIF price.

What are your payment terms?

30 percent by T/T on order and 70 percent before shipment, or an irrevocable L/C at sight.
