Industry application

EMI Shielding And Braided Sleeving

Braided copper sleeving and foil shielding layers that protect a cable without taking away its flexibility.

Context

What This Industry Asks Of A Conductor

Braided sleeving is one of the product application areas the business serves, and it sits at an awkward intersection: it has to provide shielding coverage and mechanical protection while leaving the cable underneath as flexible as it was designed to be. Both halves of the answer come from the same capability as the conductors, fine copper drawn small enough to braid without stiffening, and plating applied evenly enough that shielding continuity survives the life of the cable. The foil side of the same problem is covered by our precision copper foil, used as a shielding layer rather than as a wound conductor.

Requirements

The Constraints That Actually Govern

Industry pain points

  • Shielding stiffens a cable that was specified to flex.
  • Unplated copper braid corrodes and loses shielding continuity.
  • Coverage has to balance shielding performance against flexibility and diameter.
  • Braid and conductor often come from different suppliers with different plating standards.

What the conductor has to deliver

  • Fine copper braid that does not defeat cable flexibility.
  • Plating for corrosion resistance and termination.
  • Foil shielding layers for constructions where braid is too bulky.
  • One supplier for the conductor and the shield.
Delivery

Process

From Your Targets To Repeat Production

1

Requirement

You send the conductor resistance, outer diameter, tensile strength, swing life and soldering method. All five are treated as one problem.

2

Material selection

Foil and base metal chosen from bare copper, oxygen-free copper and the tin-copper, iron-copper, silver-copper, nickel-chromium, nickel-iron and copper-nickel alloys.

3

Core and plating

Fiber core picked for working temperature and abrasion; tin, silver or nickel plating specified at 0.3 um to 2 um.

4

Sampling

We build and test a sample. No minimum order quantity applies to conventional or customized sampling.

5

Verification

Resistance, tensile strength and elongation are measured on our own equipment, with salt spray where corrosion matters.

6

Production and shipment

Two shifts keep delivery on schedule, and a comprehensive loading report goes out with every shipment.

Questions

EMI Shielding And Braided Sleeving: Frequently Asked Questions

Can the braid be plated?

Yes. Tin, silver and nickel plating are available, at a customizable thickness between 0.3 um and 2 um, applied uniform and continuous with strong adhesion.

Can you supply the conductor and the shield together?

Both come from the same fine copper drawing and plating capability, so the conductor and the braid over it can be specified as one package.
