Braided Shielding Sleeve

Shielding and mechanical protection without stiffening the cable.

Braided Shielding Sleeve manufactured by Superfinewire
Overview

What Braided Shielding Sleeve Is For

Braided sleeving is where a conductor stops carrying the signal and starts protecting it. Braided from fine copper or plated copper, it goes over a cable core to provide shielding and mechanical protection, and it has to stay flexible enough not to defeat the flexibility of the cable it covers. It is one of the product application areas the business serves, listed alongside medical cable, consumer electronics cables, heater products, conductive textile products and automotive, and it draws on the same fine copper and plating capability as the conductors underneath it.

Value

Why Engineers Choose This Construction

Key benefits

  • Shielding and mechanical protection without stiffening the cable.
  • Braided from fine copper or plated copper produced in house.
  • Tin, silver or nickel plating available for corrosion and termination.
  • Coverage and construction set to the cable it has to protect.

Problems it solves

  • Shielding stiffens a cable that was designed to flex.
  • Unplated copper braid corrodes and loses shielding continuity.
  • Braid coverage has to balance shielding performance against flexibility.
Fit

How It Is Made And Checked

Manufacturing process

  1. Draw fine copper or alloy wire to braiding diameter.
  2. Plate where specified, at 0.3 um to 2 um.
  3. Braid to the agreed coverage and diameter.
  4. Inspect coating continuity and adhesion.
  5. Pack with a loading report.

Quality control

  1. DC resistance measured on a resistance tester to confirm the conductor lands on the agreed value.
  2. Tensile testing for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and elongation after fracture.
  3. Elongation rate measured during stretching to evaluate mechanical properties and mechanical strength.
  4. Salt spray testing where the finished cable will face a corrosive environment.
  5. A comprehensive loading report issued with every shipment.
Customization

What You Can Change

Customization options

  • Conductor resistance set to your target value.
  • Outer diameter held to your ceiling.
  • Tensile strength and breaking load specified to the application.
  • High swing performance tuned to the flex life the cable has to reach.
  • Solderability matched to your termination process.

Certifications

No third-party certification is published for this product line. Test data from our own resistance, tensile, elongation and salt spray equipment is supplied with samples and with every shipment loading report.

Questions

Braided Shielding Sleeve: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you plate the braid?

Yes, where specified. Tin, silver and nickel plating are available at a customizable coating thickness between 0.3 um and 2 um, applied uniform and continuous with strong adhesion.

Can braided sleeving be supplied with the conductor?

The braid and the conductors it covers come from the same fine copper and plating capability, so both can be specified together.

What is anti-wave sleeving?

It is one of the application areas we list for braided products, where the sleeve is used over a cable to manage electromagnetic interference as well as to protect it mechanically.
