No. A valve on light duty with low friction and low differential pressure can work on the controller signal alone. A positioner earns its place when friction, thermal growth or unbalanced process force stops the stem reaching the demanded position.

Will a positioner fix a valve that hunts?

Often yes, if the hunting comes from stem friction or from lag between signal and movement. It will not fix hunting caused by controller tuning or by a valve that is grossly oversized for the duty.

Can I add a positioner to a valve that never had one?
