AK-ER90S-G Gas Shielded Welding Wire for Low Alloy Steel.
A copper-plated solid wire designed for argon-rich shielded welding of low alloy steel with high tensile strength and excellent impact toughness at low temperatures.
Product Overview
AK-ER90S-G is a copper-plated gas shielded welding wire for low alloy steel, formulated to deliver a tensile strength of 600 MPa in the deposited metal. The wire is intended for use with argon-rich shielding gas mixtures, specifically 80% Ar + 20% CO2.
It is suitable for welding applications in demanding environments such as ships, pipelines, construction machinery, containers, petrochemical plants, boilers, pressure vessels, bridges, lifting equipment, high-rise buildings, and steel structures. The weld metal exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, including high strength and toughness at low temperatures.
Application: Argon-rich (80%Ar+20%CO2 ) gas shielded welding, mainly used in ships, pipelines, construction machinery, containers, petrochemicals, boilers and pressure vessels, bridges, lifting equipment, high-rise buildings and steel structures and other fields Welding of low-alloy steels.
Key Benefits
High Tensile Strength
The deposited metal achieves a tensile strength of 668 MPa, meeting the requirements for structural applications in low alloy steel welding.
Excellent Low-Temperature Toughness
Impact values reach 135 J at minus 40 degrees C, ensuring reliable performance in cold environments without embrittlement.
Clean Weld Metal with Low Impurities.
The chemical composition includes low levels of sulfur (0.008%) and phosphorus (0.001%), contributing to reduced risk of cracking and improved weld soundness.
Stable Arc and Good Weld Pool Control.
The wire is designed for consistent performance across flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions with recommended current ranges for each diameter.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of low alloy steel in shipbuilding and offshore structures.
- Pipeline and pressure vessel fabrication.
- Construction machinery and heavy equipment.
- Petrochemical and boiler plant components.
- Bridges, high-rise buildings, and steel structures.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors supplying solid wires for industrial fabrication.
- Fabricators working with low alloy steel in structural and pressure applications.
- Contractors involved in pipeline, shipyard, and heavy equipment projects requiring consistent weld quality.
Problems It Solves
- Achieving high tensile strength and toughness in low alloy steel welds without compromising ductility or crack resistance.
- Maintaining consistent weld quality across different positions and joint types using a single wire type.
- Reducing the risk of weld defects caused by high sulfur or phosphorus content in the filler metal.

Use Guide
- Select wire diameter based on joint thickness and position: 0.8 mm for thin sections, 1.0 mm for medium, 1.2 mm for thicker sections.
- Use 80% Ar + 20% CO2 shielding gas for optimal arc stability and weld bead appearance.
- Set welding current within the recommended ranges: 0.8 mm (50–180 A flat/horizontal, 50–100 A vertical/overhead), 1.0 mm (80–250 A flat/horizontal, 70–160 A vertical/overhead), 1.2 mm (100–360 A flat/horizontal, 80–220 A vertical/overhead).
- Ensure the wire is stored in a dry environment and protected from moisture and contamination before use.
- Clean joint surfaces of oil, rust, paint, and moisture prior to welding to avoid porosity and defects.
How It Compares
AK-ER90S-G is a solid wire for gas shielded welding of low alloy steel, differing from flux-cored wires in that it requires external shielding gas and produces no slag. Compared to lower-strength wires like ER70S-6, it offers higher tensile strength and better low-temperature impact performance. It is not intended for use with pure CO2 or pure argon, as the 80% Ar + 20% CO2 mixture provides the best balance of penetration, arc stability, and weld metal properties.
