AK-ER80YM Gas Shielded Welding Wire for 800MPa High Strength Steel.

A multi-element alloyed gas shielded wire for high-strength, high-toughness welding of low alloy steels, delivering excellent crack resistance and low-temperature impact performance in thick-section applications.

Welding Wire

Product Overview

AK-ER80YM is a gas shielded welding wire designed for low alloy and high strength steel applications, meeting the requirements of EN ISO, AWS A5.28 ER110S-G, and GB/T 8110 ER76-G standards. It is formulated for 800 MPa grade weld metal with controlled impurities, including sulfur at 0.005% and phosphorus at 0.006%.

The wire uses a multi-element alloy strengthening method to achieve high tensile strength, high toughness, and high purity in the deposited metal. It is suitable for all-position welding with a smooth bead profile and excellent crack resistance, particularly in thick plate and high-stress environments.

Application: AK-ER80YM is an 800MPA grade gas shielded welding wire for low alloy and high strength steel. It adopts multi-element alloy strengthening method, strictly controls the content of impurities such as s and p in the welding wire, and obtains high strength, high toughness and high purity weld metal. Excellent all-position welding technology, beautiful weld molding. The deposited metal has excellent low temperature initial plasticity and crack resistance. It is mainly used for welding WSD690E high strength and high toughness penstock in pumped storage power station, and for welding volute, seat ring and other thick plates in 800MPa high strength hydraulic power plant.

Key Benefits

High Strength and Toughness.

The deposited metal achieves a tensile strength of at least 760 MPa and yield stress of at least 680 MPa, with elongation of at least 15% and impact energy of 93 J at minus 40 degrees C.

Low Impurity Control

Sulfur content is limited to 0.005% and phosphorus to 0.006%, reducing the risk of hot cracking and improving weld metal cleanliness and ductility.

Excellent Low-Temperature Performance

The weld metal maintains high impact toughness at minus 40 degrees C, making it suitable for cryogenic and high-stress service conditions.

All-Position Welding Capability

The wire supports flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding with stable arc and consistent bead formation, reducing the need for multiple consumables.

Where It Is Used

  • Welding of WSD690E high strength and high toughness penstock in pumped storage power stations.
  • Joining volute, seat ring, and other thick plates in 800 MPa high strength hydraulic power plant components.
  • High-strength steel structures requiring crack resistance and low-temperature toughness.

Who It Is For

  • Fabricators and EPC contractors working on high-strength steel structures in hydropower and pumped storage projects.
  • Welding distributors supplying consumables for demanding power plant and infrastructure applications.
  • Maintenance teams performing repairs on thick-section high-strength steel components.

Problems It Solves

  • Achieving high-strength weld metal with sufficient toughness and crack resistance in thick-section high-strength steel joints.
  • Controlling impurities like sulfur and phosphorus to prevent weld defects in critical applications.
  • Maintaining consistent weld quality across all positions without changing consumables or parameters.

Note: 1. protective gas Ar + 20% CO2, the mixed gas, gas flow 15-20 L/min. Control arc length during welding to avoid welding defects such as blowhole. 2. When welding, it is advisable to control the length of dry extension of welding wire at 10-18mm. When the current is more than 250A, the dry elongation should be controlled in the range of 20-25mm 3. and the impurities such as rust, oil and water should be thoroughly removed from the welding place. 4. thin plate welding torch can be inclined to the side of the weld to reduce penetration to avoid penetration of the base metal. 5. When the wind speed is 1.5 m/s in outdoor construction, measures should be taken to prevent air hole and other defects

Technical Features

  • Multi-element alloyed composition with controlled carbon at 0.075%, silicon at 0.56%, manganese at 1.70%, nickel at 2.1%, copper at 0.32%, molybdenum at 0.40%, and chromium at 0.21%
  • Deposited metal tensile strength at least 760 MPa, yield stress at least 680 MPa, elongation at least 15%, and impact energy at least 93 J at minus 40 degrees C.
  • Supplied in 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm, and 1.6 mm diameters with recommended current ranges for each.

Use Guide

  • Use a shielding gas mixture of argon plus 20% carbon dioxide at a flow rate of 15 to 20 L/min.
  • Maintain arc length to avoid porosity and other defects; control dry extension at 10 to 18 mm for currents below 250 A, and 20 to 25 mm for currents above 250 A.
  • Thoroughly clean the joint area of rust, oil, and moisture before welding.
  • For thin plate welding, incline the torch slightly to the side of the weld to reduce penetration and avoid burn-through.
  • When welding outdoors with wind speeds above 1.5 m/s, implement protective measures to prevent porosity.

How It Compares

AK-ER80YM is a gas shielded wire for high-strength steel, differing from standard mild steel wires like ER70S-6 in both chemistry and mechanical properties. It is not intended for low-strength applications. Compared to other high-strength wires, AK-ER80YM offers a balanced combination of strength, toughness, and low-temperature performance with controlled impurities. It is not a substitute for low-hydrogen electrodes in critical crack-sensitive joints.
