What This Machine Does
The X6140 is a manual knee type horizontal universal milling machine, and what makes it universal is the worktable: it rotates plus or minus 45 degrees, so with a dividing head accessory the machine will cut a spiral plane, not only straight passes. The head spindle also swivels plus or minus 45 degrees. Guideways are dovetail form for accuracy, with the rectangular guide arrangement giving the structure its rigidity, and the table surface and guideways are hardened and ground so they last under daily production. Feeds are automatic on X and Y with motorised raising and lowering of the table on Z, and longitudinal and cross auto-feed are interlocked so two feeds cannot be engaged together by mistake. The knee is carried on three supporters for heavy loads on the worktable. Both the main transmission and the feed drive are gear driven, which is what allows heavy cutting rather than belt slip under load. X Y and Z all have forced lubrication to reduce guideway wear.
Why Buyers Choose This Machine
- Worktable rotates plus or minus 45 degrees which with a dividing head allows spiral plane cutting
- Head spindle swivel of plus or minus 45 degrees covers angled faces without a tilting fixture
- Hardened and ground table surface and guideways give the wear surfaces a long service life
- Automatic feed on X and Y with motorised Z lift removes hand cranking from long passes
- Interlock on longitudinal and cross auto-feed prevents the error of engaging both at once
- Knee supported at three points carries heavy loads on the worktable
- Gear-driven main transmission and feed hold torque through heavy cutting
- Forced lubrication on X Y and Z guideways reduces wear and maintenance
Where X6140 Universal L Milling Machine Earns Its Place
Problems It Solves
- Helical and spiral forms cannot be cut on a machine without a rotating table and dividing head
- Angled faces otherwise need a tilting fixture that costs time and money to make
- Unhardened table surfaces wear and lose flatness under daily clamping and chips
- Hand feeding a long pass gives an uneven surface and tires the operator
- Engaging two feeds at once crashes the table and damages the feed train
- Belt-driven feeds slip under heavy cuts and the machine stalls instead of cutting
- Dry guideways wear quickly and the machine loses accuracy
Who It Is For
- General machine shops running manual milling work
- Toolrooms cutting helical and angular forms with a dividing head
- Maintenance workshops machining replacement parts
- Technical training institutes teaching universal milling

How It Is Built and What Can Be Changed
Operations Performed
- Horizontal milling
- Vertical milling
- Angular milling
- Spiral plane cutting
- Groove and keyway milling
Quality Control
- Table and guideway surfaces hardened then ground and checked for flatness
- Head swivel and table rotation checked for accurate setting at the 45 degree limits
- Auto-feed interlock tested so both feeds cannot engage together
- Forced lubrication checked for delivery on all three axes
- Gear transmission run under load and checked for noise and temperature
- Test cut taken and inspected before painting and packing
Customisation Options
- Dividing head and rotary accessories quoted where spiral work is required

- Digital readout offered on the axes you need it
- Manual and machine plates prepared in your working language
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| X5032 heavy duty vertical milling machine | The X5032 is a vertical machine for planes grooves and holes; the X6140 adds horizontal universal working with a rotating table and is the choice when spiral and angular work matters |
|---|---|
| X6432A universal swivel head milling machine | The X6432A uses a two-part rotary milling head to set the spindle at any angle; the X6140 works from a rotating worktable and a plus or minus 45 degree head with gear-driven feeds for heavy cutting |
| Milling helical forms on a machine without a dividing head | Without a rotating table and dividing head a spiral plane cannot be generated at all, so the work goes outside; the X6140 keeps that job in your own shop |
Running the Machine
Step 1
Clamp the workpiece on the hardened table and check clearance for the cutter and arbor
Step 2
Set the worktable rotation and the head swivel angle for the operation and lock both
Step 3
Fit the dividing head where a spiral or indexed form is being cut and set the ratio
Step 4
Select the feed direction and engage it noting the interlock allows only one at a time
Step 5
Raise the knee on the motorised Z lift to set depth of cut and lock the knee
Step 6
Check forced lubrication is working before a heavy cut
Step 7
Take a trial pass and measure before running the full length

Questions About X6140 Universal L Milling Machine
Can the X6140 cut helical or spiral forms?
Yes. The worktable rotates plus or minus 45 degrees and with the dividing head accessory the machine can realise spiral plane cutting. Tell us the form you cut and we will quote the dividing head with the machine.
What angles can the spindle head be set to?
The head spindle swivel angle is plus or minus 45 degrees.
Are the feeds automatic?
X and Y have automatic feed and the table lifts and lowers on Z by motor. Longitudinal and cross auto-feed are interlocked so that both cannot be engaged at once.
Will the table take heavy workpieces?
The knee is built with three supporters specifically for heavy loads on the worktable. Send us your workpiece weight and dimensions and we will confirm.
Is the table surface hardened?
Yes. The table surface and guideways are hardened and ground, which gives the sliding surfaces a longer life.
What power supply do you build to?
Send us your supply voltage frequency and phase and the machine will be built to match.
What are your payment and trade terms?
We quote FOB CFR and CIF. Payment is 30 percent by T/T on order and 70 percent before shipment, or an irrevocable L/C at sight.
