Overview

What This Machine Does

The T8216 and T8210D bore the rod bushing hole in connecting rods from diesel and petrol engines in automobiles and tractors, covering both the rod bushing and the copper bush pressed into it. A rod that has had a new small end bush fitted is not finished until that bush is bored true and to size; done by hand the bore ends up oval or off centre, and the gudgeon pin either seizes or knocks. These machines do that operation in a controlled setup, with good rigidity and straightforward operation so a rebuild technician can run them. By changing the corresponding clamps the rod bushing seat hole itself can also be completed on the machine. Accessories are available for centring, a rectifying tool, the boring tool and boring micro-adjustment, which take the guesswork out of hitting final size. Both machines are designed to work alongside the T8115 cylinder body boring machine in a rebuild line.

Key Benefits

Why Buyers Choose This Machine

  • Bores the small end bush true to size after pressing so the gudgeon pin has a correct fit
  • Handles both rod bushing and copper bush work on diesel and petrol engine rods
  • Changing the clamps lets the same machine complete the rod bushing seat hole
  • Boring micro-adjustment accessory lets the operator set final size directly instead of by trial cuts
  • Centring accessory and rectifying tool cut setup time on each rod
  • Works alongside the T8115 cylinder body boring machine as part of one rebuild line
  • Simple operation so a rebuild technician can run it without specialist boring training
Application

Where Con-Rod Bushing Boring Machine T8216 Earns Its Place

Problems It Solves

  • A pressed-in bush closes up and must be bored before the gudgeon pin will fit
  • Hand reaming a small end bush leaves it oval or off the rod centreline
  • An off-centre small end bush causes knock and rapid pin wear after rebuild
  • Sending rods out for bush boring holds up the whole engine job
  • Damaged rod bushing seat holes make a rod look like scrap when it can be recovered

Who It Is For

  • Engine rebuilders reconditioning connecting rods in-house
  • Agricultural and tractor machinery repair workshops
  • Diesel engine service shops handling rod and bush work
  • Distributors equipping engine rebuild lines in export markets

Application Scenarios

  • Boring new small end bushes after pressing them into connecting rods
  • Reconditioning tractor and truck con rods in a rebuild shop
  • Machining copper bushes in diesel engine connecting rods
  • Completing the rod bushing seat hole with the corresponding clamps
  • Batch con rod work in a shop that also runs a T8115 block boring machine

Comparison

How It Compares With the Alternatives

Cylinder body boring machine T8115The T8115 bores the block; the T8216 and T8210D do the connecting rod bush work, and the two are meant to sit in the same rebuild line
Hand reaming a pressed-in bushHand reaming follows whatever the bush has done under the press; boring on this machine sets the bore true to the rod and to size
Replacing the connecting rodReboring a bush or recovering the seat hole saves a rod that would otherwise be replaced, which on a tractor or truck engine is a significant part cost
Use Guide

Running the Machine

Step 1

Press the new bush into the connecting rod small end

Step 2

Clamp the rod on the machine and locate it with the centring accessory

Step 3

Fit the boring tool and set the first cut with the micro-adjustment

Step 4

Take a light pass and measure the bore against the gudgeon pin size

Step 5

Bore to final size checking for roundness and alignment to the big end

Step 6

Change to the corresponding clamps where the rod bushing seat hole also needs machining

Step 7

Deburr and wash the rod before assembly
