Why A Schedule Beats A Reaction

Packing machines fail predictably. Sealing elements degrade, pneumatic seals wear, sensors get dusty and load cells drift. All of it is visible before it becomes a stoppage, which means all of it can be scheduled.

Daily At The End Of Shift

• Wipe the sealing jaws while they are still warm; cold residue is far harder to remove.
• Empty the hopper if the product is hygroscopic or the plant is unheated.
• Clear dust from the film path, the photoelectric sensors and the eye mark reader.
• Check the air filter bowl for water and drain it.
• Log the checkweigher mean, not only the reject count.

Weekly

• Check and re-tension drive belts and chains.
• Inspect the sealing jaw faces for pitting and the sealing elements for uneven heat.
• Check pneumatic cylinders and fittings for leaks by ear with the line stopped.
• Verify the scale against a certified reference weight and record the result.
• On premade bag machines, inspect the vacuum cups and replace anything hardened.

Monthly

• Lubricate to the schedule in the manual. Where a self-lubrication system is fitted, check its level rather than assuming it.
• Inspect the film unwind bearings and the dancer arm movement.
• Check earth continuity and terminal tightness in the control cabinet with the power isolated.
• Clean the cabinet filters. A hot cabinet shortens drive life more than anything else.
• Back up the PLC and HMI programs and the stored recipes to a labelled drive kept off the machine.

Annually

• Full load cell calibration with certified weights across the range, not just at one point.
• Replace sealing elements and thermocouples as a set rather than individually.
• Overhaul or replace pneumatic valves that have reached their cycle count.
• Review the spare parts holding against what you have actually consumed in the year.

The touch screen stores packaging process parameters for different products so they can be recalled at any time without resetting. Back that data up. Rebuilding twenty recipes by hand after a controller failure costs more shift time than any spare part on this list.
