I only have the old spring, no drawing. Is that enough?

Which way should the spring be wound?

Wind direction has to match how the mechanism loads the spring, otherwise it unwinds instead of tightening. If you are unsure, say which way the lever travels and it can be worked out.

Can you match a spring rate exactly?

The rate follows from wire diameter, coil diameter and active coils. If the envelope is fixed, one of those has to give, so it is agreed per project rather than promised in advance.

Stainless or spring steel?

Stainless for corrosion, washdown or where a coating is not wanted. Spring steel gives a higher rate for the same wire size and costs less, but it needs protecting.
