When To Specify It

Stainless is the default when a part is washed, wetted or handled, and when it has to keep its dimensions while doing so. It costs more to buy and more to cut than aluminium, and it is worth it exactly when corrosion or load makes it worth it, and not otherwise.

  • It work-hardensInterrupted cuts and dwelling in the cut make the surface harder, which is a machining consideration that shows up in price.
  • It is heavyRoughly three times the density of aluminium. On a fixture that gets lifted all day, that matters.
  • GallingStainless running on stainless can seize. Pair it with a different material, or specify a surface treatment.

Questions About Stainless Steel

Which stainless grade should I specify?
Put the grade on the drawing based on the environment and the load. If you are unsure, describe what the part is exposed to and what it has to hold, and the choice can be discussed before quoting.
Is stainless always the safe choice?
No. It is heavier, more expensive and can gall against itself. Where there is no corrosion duty, aluminium or an engineering plastic is often the better engineering answer.
Does stainless need passivating?
Machining can leave free iron on the surface which then rusts. Where the part is in a corrosive duty, specify passivation on the drawing.

Not Sure Which Material The Job Needs

Describe what the part touches, what it has to carry and who has to lift it. Those three answers usually pick the material on their own.
