What changes when the board has to survive a season outdoors
Sunlight Is the Limiting Factor Outdoors
Polypropylene is already waterproof, chemically resistant and colourfast against cardboard. Sustained ultraviolet exposure is the condition that shortens outdoor life, which is why UV stabilised grade exists alongside corona treated, anti-static, conductive and flame retardant grades.
Specify It as a Grade
UV stabilisation is applied during extrusion, in the same way as the other modified grades. It has to be ordered as a grade rather than added to a finished sheet.
It Combines With Printing Grade
Outdoor signage usually needs two things at once: a 45 dyne corona treated surface so the ink and vinyl bond, and UV stabilisation so the panel survives the season. State both at enquiry stage.
What Else Affects Outdoor Life
Panel thickness and weight per square metre matter as much as the grade for a sign that has to resist wind. Fixing method matters too: a panel fixed only at the corners flexes far more than one supported along an edge.
Where a much longer outdoor life is needed, AlumaCorr, which is a corrugated plastic core faced with aluminium on both sides, has a service life of up to 10 years.
