Where polypropylene wins, where carton still makes sense
The Structural Difference
Both materials use the same idea: two flat skins separated by flutes. In cardboard the skins and flutes are paper held together with adhesive. In corrugated plastic the whole section is extruded in one pass from polypropylene, so there is no adhesive line to fail and no fibre to absorb water.
Water Is the Decisive Factor
Cardboard loses strength as soon as it takes on moisture. Corrugated plastic is waterproof, moisture resistant and colourfast, and it resists chemicals and corrosion. That is why it replaces carton in ice-packed produce, washdown areas, humid sea freight and outdoor storage.
Reuse Changes the Cost Question
A carton is cheaper per unit. A polypropylene container is reusable, washable and 100% recyclable, so the comparison that matters is cost per trip rather than cost per box. In a closed loop where the container comes back, the plastic container is normally the cheaper option over the life of the loop.
In a one-way shipment that never returns, carton often remains the sensible choice.
Printing and Appearance
Cardboard takes ink easily. Polypropylene does not, unless it is corona treated. Everplast printing grade sheet is etched on both faces to 45 dynes during extrusion, which is what screen and digital inks and self-adhesive vinyl need to bond.
