What This Product Is For
2205 duplex stainless steel, UNS S32205 and S31803, is a 22 percent chromium, 3 percent molybdenum, 5 to 6 percent nickel and nitrogen alloyed duplex grade. It combines high general, localised and stress corrosion resistance with high strength and excellent impact toughness. Its pitting and crevice corrosion resistance is superior to 316L or 317L austenitic stainless in almost all corrosive media.
Key Benefits
- Pitting and crevice resistance above 316L and 317L in almost all corrosive media
- High strength allows a thinner section for the same duty, which cuts weight and weld volume
- Excellent impact toughness for structural and pressure applications
- High corrosion and erosion fatigue resistance in flowing service
- Lower thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic grades, which reduces distortion

Who It Is For
- Pressure vessel designers looking to cut wall thickness
- Chemical and offshore equipment fabricators
- Buyers upgrading from 316L after chloride pitting failures
- Stockists carrying wide duplex sheet up to 2500 mm
Problems It Solves
- Chloride stress corrosion cracking that austenitic sheet cannot resist
- Excess weight when a design is driven by the lower strength of 316L
- Distortion during welding caused by high thermal expansion in austenitic sheet
- Erosion fatigue in flowing corrosive service
Application Scenarios
- Chemical tankers and cargo tanks
- Seawater and brine handling equipment
- Pressure vessels where weight saving matters
- Flue gas desulphurisation and scrubber internals

Technical Features
- 22 percent chromium, 3 percent molybdenum, 5 to 6 percent nickel with nitrogen
- Duplex structure giving high strength and excellent impact toughness
- Pitting and crevice resistance superior to 316L and 317L
- Lower thermal expansion and higher thermal conductivity than austenitic grades
- Width to 2500 mm, wider than the standard austenitic sheet range
Materials
- 2205 duplex stainless steel
Manufacturing Process
- Hot rolling
- Cold rolling
- Solution annealing
- Pickling
Quality Control
- Chemistry verified for chromium, molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen
- Solution annealing confirmed so the ferrite to austenite balance stays in range
- Thickness and width measured against the ordered dimensions
- Surface finish inspected before packing
Customisation Options
- Width up to 2500 mm, wider than the standard austenitic range
- Eight surface finishes including mirror
- Cold rolled or hot rolled condition selected by thickness
Use Guide
- Design to the higher duplex strength so the section can be reduced against a 316L baseline
- Control weld heat input to keep the ferrite to austenite balance
- Do not use duplex above its temperature limit, where the structure embrittles
- Pickle and passivate welds before service in chloride media
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| 316L stainless sheet | 2205 offers pitting and crevice corrosion resistance superior to 316L in almost all corrosive media, plus far higher strength |
|---|---|
| 317L stainless sheet | 2205 also beats 317L on localised corrosion resistance while carrying less nickel |
| 904L plate | 904L is the better choice in reducing acids such as dilute sulphuric, while 2205 wins on strength and chloride stress corrosion resistance |
