2205 Duplex Sheet and Why Designers Reach for It

Reading the Name

2205 belongs to the duplex family. The number refers to the composition, which is approximately 22 percent chromium, 5 percent nickel and 3 percent molybdenum with a balanced amount of iron, plus a nitrogen addition. Knowing that makes the grade easy to place against a 316L or 317L alternative.

Corrosion Resistance and Strength Together

2205 offers excellent resistance across a wide range of corrosive environments including those containing chlorides and acids, which is why it appears in chemical processing, marine applications and oil and gas production. Compared with austenitic stainless it also has significantly higher yield and ultimate tensile strength, so structures can be designed lighter and more compact.

Fabrication Behaviour

Despite the higher strength, 2205 exhibits good weldability, which keeps fabrication and joining straightforward. The duplex structure also contributes exceptional fatigue resistance, which matters in applications under cyclic loading and vibration such as structural components and offshore equipment.

The Cost Argument

2205 can be a cost effective alternative to other high performance stainless steels or nickel based alloys. Its lower nickel content makes it less expensive than austenitic grades of comparable corrosion resistance, while still offering superior strength. It also retains its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at elevated temperature.

Ordering Notes

Sheet is available cold rolled 0.3 to 3 mm and hot rolled 3 to 120 mm, in widths to 2500 mm and lengths to 12000 mm, to ASTM A240, ASTM A480 and EN 10088-2, in finishes from No.1 through to mirror. The wider 2500 mm width is often the deciding factor on tank courses.
