The standard market hairline is 180 to 240 grit, and varying the roughness of the polished grain changes how the surface reads. Crossing the grain produces a cross hairline, and polishing in a circular pattern produces a circular hairline, which is why this is the most widely used decorative treatment for stainless steel.
