AKDF-2B Low-Hydrogen Electrode for Wear and Corrosion Resistant Surfacing.

A low-hydrogen coated electrode for surfacing welds on components exposed to water, steam, and gas at temperatures below 500°C, with good crack resistance and machinable hard alloy layer.

Welding Electrodes

Product Overview

AKDF-2B is a low-hydrogen coating welding electrode designed for surfacing applications on parts subject to wear, heat, and corrosive environments. The deposited metal exhibits good wear resistance, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, and crack resistance.

The surfacing process is straightforward: preheating is not required for most components, and post-weld heat treatment is not needed. However, for high-carbon or high-alloy large parts, preheating to 100–200°C is recommended before welding.

The electrode is intended for use with DC reverse polarity and produces a surfacing hard alloy layer that can be machined after welding.

Application: Used for surfacing welding of parts affected by water, steam and gas with working temperature below 500C: such as surfacing welding of 35# steel, 45# steel, low alloy steel, mixer blade, blast furnace bell, and sealing surface of high and medium pressure valves and fixes.

Key Benefits

Good Crack Resistance

The low-hydrogen coating and balanced chemistry reduce the risk of cracking during and after welding, especially in critical applications.

Machinable Hard Alloy Layer.

The deposited layer achieves sufficient hardness and integrity to allow machining after surfacing, enabling final shaping or fitting.

No Post-Weld Heat Treatment Required.

For standard components, the electrode eliminates the need for post-weld heat treatment, reducing processing time and cost.

Suitable for High-Temperature Service.

The deposited metal maintains performance in environments with working temperatures below 500°C, making it suitable for steam and gas exposure.

Where It Is Used

  • Surfacing of 35# steel, 45# steel, and low alloy steel components.
  • Welding of mixer blades, blast furnace bells, and sealing surfaces of high and medium pressure valves.
  • Repair and reinforcement of parts exposed to water, steam, and gas under moderate thermal conditions.

Who It Is For

  • Welding consumable distributors supplying surfacing electrodes for industrial maintenance.
  • Fabricators and repair shops working on valve sealing surfaces and rotating equipment parts.
  • Maintenance teams in power plants, petrochemical facilities, and heavy machinery operations.

Problems It Solves

  • Cracking in surfacing welds due to hydrogen content or thermal stress in high-stress components.
  • Need for multiple post-weld treatments when using electrodes that require heat treatment.
  • Difficulty in machining the surfacing layer due to poor hardness control or brittleness.

Technical Features

  • Low-hydrogen coating for reduced risk of hydrogen-induced cracking.
  • Deposited metal with carbon content of 0.25 percent and chromium content of 12.0–16.0 percent.
  • Other elements totaling at least 8 percent in the chemical composition.
  • Supplied in 3.2 mm, 4.0 mm, and 5.0 mm diameters with specified current and arc length ranges.
  • Designed for DC reverse polarity welding.

Use Guide

  • Bake the electrode at 360°C for 1 hour before use to ensure low hydrogen content.
  • Preheat the workpiece to above 300°C before welding to prevent cracking, especially on large or high-alloy parts.
  • Ensure the thickness of the surfacing hard alloy layer is at least 5 mm for optimal performance.
  • Apply continuous welding during the surfacing process to maintain uniformity and avoid defects.

How It Compares

AKDF-2B is a low-hydrogen electrode suitable for surfacing in corrosive and high-temperature environments. Unlike cellulosic or rutile electrodes, it is not intended for structural welding. It offers better crack resistance and wear performance than standard mild steel electrodes but requires proper preheating and baking. It is not a substitute for high-alloy electrodes in extreme conditions.

AKDF-2B Questions

What is the recommended preheat temperature for AKDF-2B?
