AKD948 Graphite-Coated Cast Iron Surfacing Electrode for High Wear Resistance.

A high-carbon, high-chromium cast iron surfacing electrode with stable arc and minimal slag, designed for components exposed to severe abrasive wear and impact loading.

Welding Electrodes

Product Overview

AKD948 is a graphite-type coated high-carbon, high-chromium cast iron surfacing electrode used for rebuilding and protecting surfaces subject to high abrasive wear and impact. The electrode coating provides excellent electrical conductivity and maintains a stable arc with minimal spatter during welding.

The coating contains very little mineral slag-forming agent, resulting in negligible slag formation. This eliminates the need for slag removal between passes, improving welding efficiency. The deposited metal efficiency reaches up to 85%.

The surfacing metal produced has high hardness, excellent resistance to wear and cavitation, making it suitable for critical wear-prone components in demanding industrial applications.

Application: Used for surfacing welding to bear a certain impact load and require high abrasive wear resistance, such as wear-resistant plates and wear-resistant rin gs (commonly known as eye plates) for concrete pump S pipe valves, hammer mills Surfacing welding of hammer heads, material distribution discs, sintering crus-her gear rollers, etc.

Key Benefits

Stable Arc with Minimal Spatter.

The graphite coating ensures consistent arc performance and low spatter, contributing to cleaner welds and reduced post-weld cleanup.

No Slag Removal Required.

Due to the minimal slag formation, there is no need to remove slag between passes, which increases welding speed and reduces labor.

High Deposition Efficiency

The electrode achieves a deposited metal efficiency of up to 85%, reducing material waste and improving cost efficiency.

High Hardness and Wear Resistance.

The surfacing metal delivers high hardness and excellent resistance to abrasive wear and cavitation, extending component service life.

Where It Is Used

  • Surfacing of wear-resistant plates and rings (eye plates) for concrete pump S pipes and valves.
  • Rebuilding of hammer heads, material distribution discs, and sintering crusher gear rollers.
  • Welding repair and reinforcement of components in high-impact, high-abrasion environments.

Who It Is For

  • Welding contractors specializing in wear-resistant surfacing for mining and construction equipment.
  • Maintenance teams responsible for repairing high-wear components in industrial machinery.
  • Fabricators rebuilding parts for concrete pumps, crushers, and material handling systems.

Problems It Solves

  • Difficulty in achieving consistent wear resistance on high-impact components due to poor alloy transfer or unstable arc.
  • Excessive time spent on slag removal during multi-pass surfacing operations.
  • Low deposition efficiency to higher material consumption and increased rework.

How It Compares

AKD948 is a graphite-coated high-carbon, high-chromium cast iron surfacing electrode designed for high wear resistance and minimal slag. Unlike basic or rutile-coated electrodes that produce significant slag and require removal, AKD948’s coating minimizes slag formation. It is not intended for structural welding but for surfacing applications where hardness and abrasion resistance are critical. It differs from standard mild steel electrodes in both composition and purpose.

AKD948 Questions

What are the recommended welding parameters for each diameter?
For 3.2 mm: 90-120 A; for 4.0 mm: 150-180 A; for 5.0 mm: 180-210 A.
What is the chemical composition of the deposited metal?
Carbon: 4.0-5.0%, Chromium: 25.0-28.0%, Other elements: 8.0-13.5%.
Is pre-baking required before welding?
Yes. The electrodes must be baked at 250°C for 1 hour before use to prevent porosity and ensure arc stability.
