AKD717 Tungsten Carbide Surfacing Electrode for High-Wear Applications.
A tungsten carbide surfacing electrode designed for high-wear mechanical components, delivering wear resistance through a core with over 60% tungsten carbide content and stable DC arc performance at low current.
Product Overview
AKD717 is a tungsten carbide surfacing electrode made from HO8A steel strip rolled into an 'O' shape, with a welding core containing more than 60% tungsten carbide by weight. The core includes tungsten and carbon in a transition form to enhance wear resistance.
The electrode is suitable for DC welding with a stable arc and low current operation, making it effective for precision surfacing on high-wear components. It meets the GB/T984 EDD-B-15 standard.
Recommended welding parameters are 120-160 A at 350 mm for 3.2 mm diameter and 140-190 A at 350 mm for 4.0 mm diameter.
Application: Suitable for surfacing mechanical parts that are resistant to strong ro ck wear, such as the claw back of the three-cone drill bit, blower blades, powerful c oal mining drums, sugar press rolls, concrete mixer blades, etc.
Key Benefits
High Wear Resistance from Tungsten Carbide Core.
The core contains over 60% tungsten carbide by weight, providing excellent resistance to strong rock and abrasive wear in demanding applications.
Stable Arc with Low Current.
The electrode maintains a stable arc at low current levels, allowing controlled deposition and reduced heat input during surfacing.
Suitable for DC Welding.
Designed for DC electrode positive (DCEN) operation, which ensures consistent arc performance and good fusion with the base material.
Preheating and Baking Required.
To prevent cracking, the electrode must be baked at 360°C for 1 hour before use, and the workpiece must be preheated above 300°C prior to welding.
Where It Is Used
- Surfacing of three-cone drill bit claw backs.
- Blower blades exposed to abrasive materials.
- Coal mining drums subject to high wear.
- Sugar press rolls in high-abrasion environments.
- Concrete mixer blades requiring extended service life.
Who It Is For
- Welding contractors specializing in wear-resistant surfacing.
- Maintenance teams in mining, construction, and sugar processing industries.
- Fabricators repairing or rebuilding high-wear mechanical parts.
Problems It Solves
- Cracking in surfacing welds due to insufficient preheating and improper electrode conditioning.
- Rapid wear of mechanical parts in abrasive environments due to inadequate surfacing material.
- Inconsistent arc performance and poor deposition control with unsuitable surfacing electrodes.

Use Guide
- Bake the electrode at 360°C for 1 hour before welding to remove moisture and prevent porosity.
- Preheat the workpiece to above 300°C before starting the surfacing operation to reduce the risk of cracking.
- Use 3.2 mm diameter with 120-160 A at 350 mm/min travel speed, or 4.0 mm diameter with 140-190 A at 350 mm/min.
- Maintain a consistent arc length and travel speed to ensure uniform deposition and avoid overheating.
- Clean the surfacing layer between passes to remove slag and ensure good interpass bonding.
How It Compares
AKD717 is a tungsten carbide surfacing electrode with a high tungsten content and stable arc at low current, suitable for precision surfacing on high-wear components. Unlike standard mild steel electrodes, it is not intended for structural welding. Compared to other surfacing electrodes with lower carbide content, AKD717 offers enhanced wear resistance due to its core composition. It is not suitable for AC welding and requires DCEN polarity.
