AK-ER308L Super Low Carbon Stainless Steel Welding Wire for 304L and Similar Grades.

A solid stainless steel welding wire with ≤0.03% carbon, designed to prevent intergranular corrosion when welding 304L, 308L, and similar low-carbon austenitic stainless steels.

Welding Wire

Product Overview

AK-ER308L is a super low carbon stainless steel welding wire used for manual and automatic gas metal arc welding of Types 201, 302, 304, and 308 stainless steels. It is suitable for joining base metals with similar compositions, including ASTM 304L, 304LN, and 308L.

The low carbon content, capped at ≤0.03%, helps prevent sensitization and intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone, making it ideal for service environments where corrosion resistance is critical. It meets the EN ISO 14343-A:G 19 9 L and AWS A5.9 ER308L classifications.

Application: Used to weld super low carbon 21%Cr10%Ni or similar stainless steels, like ASTM 304L, 304LN,308L base metal etc.

Key Benefits

Prevents Intergranular Corrosion

With carbon content limited to ≤0.03%, AK-ER308L reduces the risk of chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, maintaining corrosion resistance in welded joints.

Compatible with 300-Series Stainless Steels.

Suitable for welding Type 304L, 308L, and similar low-carbon austenitic stainless steels, including dissimilar joints between 300-series grades.

High Impact Toughness at Low Temperature.

Deposited metal achieves 45 J at minus 196 degrees C, ensuring reliable performance in cryogenic service conditions.

Good Ductility and Formability.

Elongation of 38% indicates high ductility, which supports weldability in thin sections and complex joint geometries without cracking.

Where It Is Used

  • Welding of 304L, 304LN, and 308L stainless steel components.
  • Fabrication of chemical and petrochemical equipment requiring corrosion resistance.
  • Joining dissimilar 300-series stainless steels in industrial and marine environments.
  • Cryogenic applications where low-temperature toughness is required.

Who It Is For

  • Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel welding wire.
  • Fabricators working with 304L and similar low-carbon stainless steels.
  • Maintenance teams repairing equipment in corrosive environments.

Problems It Solves

  • Intergranular corrosion in welded joints due to high carbon content in filler metal.
  • Difficulty in meeting corrosion resistance requirements for 304L and 308L base metals.
  • Need for a single wire that performs reliably across multiple 300-series stainless steel grades.

How It Compares

AK-ER308L is designed for low-carbon stainless steel applications where intergranular corrosion resistance is critical. It differs from standard ER308 (with higher carbon content) by limiting carbon to ≤0.03%, which improves resistance to sensitization. Compared to ER309 or ER316L, it is not intended for high-chromium or molybdenum-containing base metals. For dissimilar joints involving carbon steel, a different filler such as ER309L may be required.
