AK-ER308L Low Carbon Stainless Steel Welding Wire for 304L and Similar Grades.

A super low carbon stainless steel wire designed to prevent intergranular corrosion when welding 201, 302, 304, and 308 stainless steels, including dissimilar 300-series joints.

Welding Wire

Product Overview

AK-ER308L is a super low carbon stainless steel welding wire used for welding Types 201, 302, 304, and 308 stainless steels. It is also suitable for joining some dissimilar 300-series stainless steels.

The low carbon content, limited to 0.03 percent, helps prevent intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone, making it ideal for applications where corrosion resistance is critical after welding.

Application: Used to weld super low carbon 21%Cr10%Ni or similar stainless steels, like ASTM 304L , 304LN,308L base metal etc.

Key Benefits

Prevents Intergranular Corrosion

With carbon content capped at 0.03 percent, AK-ER308L reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, maintaining corrosion resistance in welded joints.

Suitable for Dissimilar 300-Series Welding.

The wire can be used to join dissimilar 300-series stainless steels, providing consistent performance across different base metal combinations.

Complies with EN ISO 14343-A and AWS A5.9.

AK-ER308L meets the EN ISO 14343-A:G 19 9 L and AWS A5.9 ER308L classifications, ensuring compatibility with international welding standards.

High Impact Toughness at Low Temperatures.

The deposited metal achieves 45 J at minus 196 degrees C, supporting use in cryogenic environments where toughness is essential.

Where It Is Used

  • Welding of super low carbon 21% Cr 10% Ni stainless steels.
  • Joining ASTM 304L, 304LN, and 308L base metals.
  • Fabrication of chemical and petrochemical equipment requiring corrosion resistance.
  • Construction of pressure vessels and piping in aggressive environments.

Who It Is For

  • Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel welding wires.
  • Fabricators working with 304L and similar stainless steels.
  • Maintenance teams repairing equipment exposed to corrosive media.

Problems It Solves

  • Intergranular corrosion in welded joints due to high carbon content in filler metal.
  • Difficulty in achieving corrosion resistance when joining dissimilar 300-series stainless steels.
  • Lack of certified low carbon filler metal options for critical applications.

  • Supplied to EN ISO 14343-A:G 19 9 L and AWS A5.9 ER308L standards.

Use Guide

  • Select wire diameter based on joint thickness and welding position. Use standard parameters for GMAW or GTAW processes.
  • Clean the base metal surfaces thoroughly to remove oil, grease, scale, and moisture before welding.
  • Ensure proper shielding gas flow—typically argon or argon-rich mixtures—for consistent weld quality.
  • Store the wire in a dry environment and avoid exposure to humidity to prevent contamination.

How It Compares

ER308 is suitable for general use, while AK-ER308L is preferred in applications requiring enhanced corrosion resistance after welding. For higher strength or specific alloying needs, other grades like ER316L may be considered.
