AK-EA4 Submerged Arc Welding Wire for Low-Alloy High-Strength Steel.
A low alloy high-strength submerged arc welding wire designed to deliver specified mechanical properties when used with matching fluxes for structural steels like Q490.
Product Overview
AK-EA4 is a submerged arc welding wire for low-alloy high-strength structural steels. It is formulated to achieve target mechanical properties when combined with compatible fluxes such as AKJ101 or AKJ105.
The wire's chemical composition includes 0.15% carbon, 0.80% silicon, 1.60% manganese, 0.40–0.65% molybdenum, and controlled levels of sulfur and phosphorus at or below 0.030% each, supporting strength and toughness in the weld metal.
Application: With flux (such as AKJ101, AKJ105, etc.) for the welding of low-alloy high-strength structural steel such as Q490.
Key Benefits
High Tensile Strength and Yield Stress.
The wire delivers a tensile strength of 550–700 MPa and a yield stress of at least 470 MPa, meeting the requirements for high-strength structural applications.
Good Ductility and Toughness.
With elongation of at least 20% and impact values of at least 27 J at minus 30 degrees C, the deposited metal maintains performance in low-temperature service.
Compatibility with Matching Fluxes.
When used with fluxes such as AKJ101 or AKJ105, AK-EA4 ensures consistent mechanical properties and weld quality in production environments.
Controlled Chemistry for Clean Weld Metal.
Low sulfur and phosphorus content (≤0.030%) help reduce the risk of cracking and improve weld metal cleanliness, especially in critical structural joints.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of low-alloy high-strength structural steels such as Q490.
- Heavy fabrication and structural components requiring high strength and toughness.
- Submerged arc welding in automated or semi-automated production lines.
Who It Is For
- Structural steel fabricators working with high-strength steels.
- Welding distributors supplying consumables for structural and heavy equipment projects.
- EPC contractors and fabricators requiring consistent, code-compliant weld metal properties.
Problems It Solves
- Achieving specified mechanical properties in weld metal when joining high-strength low-alloy steels like Q490.
- Matching wire and flux combinations to ensure consistent performance across production batches.
- Reducing the risk of weld defects due to impurities in the deposited metal by using low-sulfur and low-phosphorus wire.

- Follow recommended welding parameters for the specific application and joint configuration.
- Clean joint surfaces of rust, oil, paint, and moisture prior to welding to avoid porosity and cracking.
How It Compares
AK-EA4 is a low alloy high-strength submerged arc wire intended for structural steels like Q490. It differs from general-purpose mild steel wires by its higher strength and controlled alloying elements. When compared to other high-strength wires, its molybdenum content (0.40–0.65%) supports improved hardenability and toughness. It is not intended for use with fluxes outside the recommended range, as this may compromise mechanical properties.
