AK-E8016-G Low-Hydrogen Alkaline Electrode for Medium Carbon and Low Alloy Steel Welding.
A dual-current, all-position electrode with stable arc and clean slag for reliable welds on medium carbon and low alloy steels.
Product Overview
AK-E8016-G is a low-alloy steel electrode with a low-hydrogen potassium type alkaline coating, suitable for manual metal arc welding of medium carbon steel and certain low alloy steels such as 15MnTi and 15MnV.
It is designed for AC and DC use and supports all welding positions. The electrode delivers excellent process performance with a stable arc, minimal spatter, easy slag removal, and a smooth, attractive weld bead.
Application: It is suitable for welding medium carbon steel and some low alloy steels, such as 15MnTi, 15MnV, etc.
Key Benefits
Stable Arc with Low Spatter.
The potassium type alkaline coating ensures a stable arc across AC and DC currents, reducing spatter and improving weld consistency, especially in vertical and overhead positions.
Easy Slag Removal
The slag formed during welding lifts off easily after cooling, reducing the need for aggressive chipping and minimizing the risk of slag inclusions in subsequent passes.
All-Position Welding Capability
AK-E8016-G performs reliably in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, allowing one electrode to cover all joint orientations without retooling.
Low-Hydrogen Performance
The low-hydrogen coating helps minimize hydrogen-induced cracking in the weld metal, supporting sound welds on medium carbon and low alloy steels.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of medium carbon steel components.
- Joining low alloy steels such as 15MnTi and 15MnV.
- Structural and pressure vessel fabrication requiring controlled weld metal chemistry.
- Applications where clean, smooth weld beads and minimal spatter are required.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors stocking low-alloy electrodes for structural and industrial use.
- Fabricators working with medium carbon and low alloy steels in structural and mechanical applications.
- Maintenance teams requiring consistent, low-hydrogen electrodes for critical welds.
Problems It Solves
- Weld cracking in medium carbon and low alloy steels due to high hydrogen content in the weld metal.
- Inconsistent arc performance and excessive spatter when using non-low-hydrogen electrodes.
- Difficulty in achieving clean, smooth welds in vertical and overhead positions with standard electrodes.

- Supplied in 2.5 mm, 3.2 mm, and 4.0 mm diameters with published current ranges for each.
Use Guide
- Select diameter by joint thickness and set current within the published range: 2.5 mm runs 60–80 A flat/horizontal and 50–70 A vertical/overhead; 3.2 mm runs 80–120 A flat/horizontal and 70–110 A vertical/overhead; 4.0 mm runs 140–180 A flat/horizontal and 120–160 A vertical/overhead.
- Clean the joint surfaces from oil, rust, moisture, and paint before welding to ensure consistent arc performance and weld quality.
- Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry if exposed to moisture before use.
- Remove slag completely between passes using a chipping hammer and wire brush to prevent contamination in the next weld pass.
How It Compares
AK-E8016-G and E8018-G both weld low alloy steels with low-hydrogen characteristics, but AK-E8016-G uses a potassium type alkaline coating that allows AC operation and offers better arc stability and slag removal. E8018-G typically requires DC and has a more rigid slag, which can be harder to remove. For applications where AC power is available or preferred, AK-E8016-G provides a more flexible solution without sacrificing weld quality.
