AK-E317-16 Rutile Stainless Steel Electrode for Cr19Ni13Mo3 and Dissimilar Steels.

A rutile-coated electrode for welding Cr19Ni13Mo3 stainless steel, clad steels, and dissimilar joints with improved acid and pitting resistance due to high molybdenum content.

Welding Electrodes

Product Overview

AK-E317-16 is a rutile-coated stainless steel electrode designed for manual metal arc welding of Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel. It delivers excellent arc stability and weldability across all positions, with a high molybdenum content that enhances resistance to acid and pitting corrosion compared to standard 316L grades.

The electrode meets EN ISO 3581-A and AWS A5.4 E317-16 classifications. It is suitable for welding similar stainless steels, clad steels, and dissimilar joints where corrosion resistance and mechanical strength are required.

Application: Used to weld similar stainless steels, clad steels and dissimilar steels.

Key Benefits

High Molybdenum Content for Corrosion Resistance.

The 3.0-4.0% molybdenum content in the deposited metal improves resistance to pitting and acid corrosion, making AK-E317-16 suitable for aggressive environments.

Stable Arc and Good Processability.

The rutile coating ensures a stable arc and smooth weld pool control, which supports consistent bead formation and ease of use in all welding positions.

Suitable for Clad and Dissimilar Steel Joints.

The electrode is designed to weld Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel and can be used on clad steels and dissimilar joints where matching the base metal's corrosion resistance is critical.

All-Position Welding Capability

AK-E317-16 can be used in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, allowing a single electrode to cover multiple joint types without switching consumables.

Where It Is Used

  • Welding Cr19Ni13Mo3 stainless steel in chemical and petrochemical equipment.
  • Joining clad steels where corrosion resistance is required.
  • Dissimilar welding between stainless steels and other alloys.
  • Maintenance and repair of components exposed to corrosive media.

Who It Is For

  • Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel electrodes for industrial applications.
  • Fabricators working with Cr19Ni13Mo3 or similar high-molybdenum stainless steels.
  • Maintenance teams handling equipment in corrosive environments requiring high weld metal performance.

Problems It Solves

  • Achieving superior pitting and acid corrosion resistance in welds compared to standard 316L electrodes.
  • Welding dissimilar or clad steels with a single electrode that matches the base metal's performance.
  • Maintaining consistent arc stability and bead quality across all positions without re-baking or parameter adjustments.

Use Guide

  • Select diameter by joint thickness and set current within the published range: 2.5 mm runs 60-80 A flat/horizontal and 40-70 A vertical/overhead, 3.2 mm runs 80-120 A and 60-100 A, 4.0 mm runs 100-150 A and 80-130 A.
  • Clean the joint surfaces from oil, grease, rust, and moisture before welding to avoid contamination.
  • Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry if exposed to moisture before use.
  • Remove slag completely between passes to prevent inclusions and ensure clean, sound welds.

How It Compares

AK-E317-16 and E316-16 both weld stainless steel and are rutile-coated, but AK-E317-16 has a higher molybdenum content (3.0-4.0%) compared to E316-16, which gives it better resistance to pitting and acid corrosion. E316-16 is suitable for general-purpose applications, while AK-E317-16 is preferred in more aggressive environments. Basic-coated electrodes offer higher toughness and lower hydrogen but require stricter drying and are less forgiving on contaminated joints.
