AK-E316-16 Rutile-Coated Stainless Steel Electrode for Corrosion-Resistant Welding.
A dual-current (AC/DC) rutile-coated electrode for all-position welding of stainless steel with excellent resistance to chloride ion pitting and heat-resistant properties.
Product Overview
AK-E316-16 is a rutile-coated Cr18Ni12Mo2 stainless steel electrode designed for manual metal arc welding. It is suitable for all-position welding and operates effectively with both AC and DC power sources.
The deposited metal exhibits good corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and crack resistance, particularly against chloride ion pitting corrosion. It is intended for use in environments involving organic and inorganic acids, especially non-oxidizing acids.
This electrode meets the EN ISO 3581-A:E (19 12 2) R 1 2 and AWS A5.4 E316-16 classifications, and is used for welding 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 stainless steel equipment and high chromium steels, as well as dissimilar steels that cannot be heat-treated after welding.
Application: It is suitable for welding 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 stainless steel equipment working in organic and inorganic acid (non-oxidizing acid) medium; it can also be used for welding high chromium steel and dissimilar steel that cannot be heat treated after welding.
Key Benefits
Excellent Chloride Ion Pitting Resistance.
The deposited metal provides strong resistance to chloride ion pitting corrosion, making it suitable for use in aggressive chemical environments including non-oxidizing acids.
All-Position Welding Capability
The electrode performs reliably in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, allowing a single consumable to cover multiple joint orientations.
Stable Arc with AC and DC Power.
The rutile coating enables a stable arc when used with both AC and DC current, supporting consistent welding performance across different power sources.
Good Heat and Crack Resistance.
The weld metal maintains integrity under thermal stress and resists cracking, especially in applications involving high-temperature service or dissimilar metal joining.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 stainless steel equipment in organic and inorganic acid environments.
- Joining high chromium steel components where post-weld heat treatment is not feasible.
- Dissimilar steel welding where heat treatment after welding is not allowed.
- General-purpose stainless steel welding in chemical and petrochemical applications.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel electrodes for industrial applications.
- Fabricators and maintenance teams working with stainless steel in corrosive environments.
- Contractors involved in chemical plant, petrochemical, and offshore equipment fabrication.
Problems It Solves
- Achieving adequate corrosion resistance in chloride-rich environments with a single electrode that does not require post-weld heat treatment.
- Welding dissimilar steels or high chromium materials that cannot be heat-treated after welding without risking cracking or reduced performance.
- Maintaining consistent weld quality across all positions using one electrode type without switching consumables.

Technical Features
- Rutile coating for stable arc and good weld pool control in all positions.
- Deposited metal tensile strength of at least 520 MPa and elongation of at least 25 percent.
- Chemical composition includes Cr 17.0–20.0%, Ni 11.0–14.0%, Mo 2.0–3.0%, and C 0.08%, with S and P each at 0.03%
- Supplied in 2.5 mm, 3.2 mm, and 4.0 mm diameters with published current ranges for each.
Use Guide
- Select diameter by joint thickness and set current within the published range: 2.5 mm runs 60–80 A flat/horizontal and 40–70 A vertical/overhead; 3.2 mm runs 80–120 A flat/horizontal and 60–100 A vertical/overhead; 4.0 mm runs 100–150 A flat/horizontal and 80–130 A vertical/overhead.
- Clean the joint surfaces thoroughly to remove oil, grease, rust, and moisture before welding.
- Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry any that have been exposed to humidity before use.
- Remove slag completely between passes to prevent inclusions and ensure good interpass bonding.
How It Compares
AK-E316-16 and E316-15 both weld stainless steel with similar alloy content, but E316-16 uses a rutile coating for better arc stability and all-position performance, while E316-15 uses a basic coating that requires DC+ and is more sensitive to moisture. E316-16 is preferred for field welding where AC power is available and all-position capability is needed. For applications requiring higher impact toughness or lower hydrogen content, a basic-coated electrode may be more suitable.
