AK-E309Mo-16 Rutile-Coated Electrode for Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Steel Welding.
A Cr23Ni13Mo2 stainless steel electrode with rutile coating for all-position welding, offering improved corrosion and crack resistance in sulfuric acid and ammonia environments.
Product Overview
AK-E309Mo-16 is a rutile-coated stainless steel electrode designed for manual metal arc welding of Cr23Ni13Mo2 grade materials. It is suitable for welding stainless steel vessels resistant to sulfuric acid and sulfur ammonia corrosion, as well as stainless steel linings, clad steel plates, and dissimilar steels.
The electrode is dual-use for AC and DC power sources and supports all welding positions. The inclusion of molybdenum in the weld metal enhances corrosion resistance, crack resistance, and oxidation resistance compared to A302 electrodes.
Application: It is suitable for welding the same type of stainless steel vessels that are resistant to sulfuric acid medium (sulfur ammonia) corrosion, and can also be used for welding stainless steel linings, clad steel plates, and dissimilar steels.
Key Benefits
Enhanced Corrosion and Crack Resistance.
The molybdenum content in the weld metal improves resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, particularly in sulfuric acid and ammonia environments.
All-Position Welding Capability
The rutile coating enables stable arc performance in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, allowing one electrode to handle full joint welding without switching consumables.
Good Process Performance
The electrode delivers consistent arc stability, smooth metal transfer, and easy slag removal, reducing the need for post-weld cleaning and rework.
Compatibility with Dissimilar Steels.
It is suitable for welding dissimilar steels, including clad steel plates and stainless steel linings, where a high-performance weld metal is required.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of stainless steel vessels resistant to sulfuric acid and sulfur ammonia corrosion.
- Stainless steel linings and clad steel plate welding.
- Joining dissimilar steels in chemical and petrochemical equipment.
- Repair and maintenance of corrosion-resistant components in aggressive environments.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel electrodes for industrial applications.
- Fabricators and maintenance teams working with stainless steel in chemical and petrochemical plants.
- Contractors involved in pressure vessel and piping systems requiring corrosion-resistant welds.
Problems It Solves
- Achieving adequate corrosion resistance in sulfuric acid and ammonia environments where standard stainless steel welds may fail.
- Reducing weld cracking in high-stress or high-temperature service conditions due to improved crack resistance.
- Sourcing a single electrode that handles both dissimilar steel joints and corrosion-resistant base metals without switching types.

Technical Features
- Rutile-coated Cr23Ni13Mo2 stainless steel electrode for AC and DC welding.
- Supplied to EN ISO 3581-A:E (23 12 2 L) R 1 2 and AWS A5.4 E309Mo-16 classifications.
- Weld metal contains 2.0-3.0% molybdenum for enhanced corrosion and oxidation resistance.
- Deposited metal tensile strength at least 550 MPa and elongation at least 25 percent.
- Available in 2.5 mm, 3.2 mm, and 4.0 mm diameters with specified current ranges for each position.
Use Guide
- Select diameter by joint thickness and set current within the published range: 2.5 mm runs 60-80 A flat/horizontal and 40-70 A vertical/overhead; 3.2 mm runs 80-120 A flat/horizontal and 60-100 A vertical/overhead; 4.0 mm runs 100-150 A flat/horizontal and 80-130 A vertical/overhead.
- Clean the base metal surface from oil, grease, rust, and moisture before welding to ensure weld integrity.
- Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry if exposed to humidity before use.
- Remove slag completely between passes to prevent inclusions and ensure clean, sound welds.
How It Compares
AK-E309Mo-16 and A302 both weld stainless steel, but AK-E309Mo-16 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in aggressive environments. A302 lacks molybdenum and is less suitable for sulfuric acid or ammonia service. Basic-coated electrodes offer higher toughness but require strict drying and are not all-position. AK-E309Mo-16 provides a balance of processability and performance for demanding applications.
