AK-E309LMo-16 Super-Low Carbon Stainless Steel Electrode for Corrosion-Resistant Welding.
A Cr23Ni13Mo2 stainless steel electrode with ≤0.04% carbon and 2.0-3.0% molybdenum, designed for high corrosion and crack resistance in dissimilar and similar super-low carbon stainless steel joints.
Product Overview
AK-E309LMo-16 is a super-low carbon Cr23Ni13Mo2 stainless steel covered electrode for manual metal arc welding. The deposited metal has a carbon content of ≤0.04%, which reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion in service.
The addition of 2.0-3.0% molybdenum enhances resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, particularly in chloride-containing environments. The electrode delivers good weldability with low porosity and stable arc performance across all positions.
It is supplied to the AWS A5.4 E309LMo-16 classification and is intended for welding similar composition super-low carbon stainless steels and dissimilar steel structures, including carbon steel to stainless steel joints.
Application: Used to weld similar composition super low carbon stainless steels and dissimilar steel structures.
Key Benefits
Low Carbon for Reduced Intergranular Corrosion Risk.
With deposited metal carbon content ≤0.04%, AK-E309LMo-16 minimizes the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, improving resistance to intergranular corrosion in welded joints.
Molybdenum-Enhanced Corrosion Resistance
The 2.0-3.0% molybdenum content increases resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking, especially in environments with chlorides or acidic conditions.
Good Weld Metal Quality with Low Porosity.
The electrode coating provides stable arc performance and produces weld metal with minimal porosity, reducing the risk of defects and ensuring sound joint integrity.
All-Position Welding Capability
Suitable for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding positions, allowing consistent performance across different joint geometries without changing consumables.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of super-low carbon stainless steels with similar composition.
- Dissimilar welding between carbon steel and stainless steel.
- Fabrication and repair of equipment exposed to corrosive environments.
- Piping, pressure vessels, and structural components in chemical and petrochemical industries.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors supplying stainless steel electrodes for industrial applications.
- Fabricators working with super-low carbon stainless steels in corrosive service.
- Maintenance teams repairing dissimilar joints in chemical processing and offshore equipment.
Problems It Solves
- Intergranular corrosion in welded joints due to high carbon content in filler metal.
- Poor resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-rich environments.
- Porosity and weld defects caused by unstable arc or poor coating performance.
- Need for multiple electrode types when welding dissimilar materials or in different positions.

- Use the recommended current ranges: 2.5 mm – flat/horizontal 60-80 A, vertical/overhead 40-70 A; 3.2 mm – flat/horizontal 80-120 A, vertical/overhead 60-100 A; 4.0 mm – flat/horizontal 100-150 A, vertical/overhead 80-130 A.
- Clean the joint surfaces thoroughly from oil, grease, rust, and moisture before welding to prevent contamination and porosity.
- Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry if exposed to moisture. Follow re-baking instructions if required.
How It Compares
AK-E309LMo-16 and E309L both weld similar stainless steel compositions, but E309LMo-16 includes molybdenum (2.0-3.0%) for improved resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking. Standard E309L lacks molybdenum and is less suitable for aggressive environments. E309LMo-16 is preferred for service conditions involving chlorides or high corrosion risk.
