AK-E309-16 Cr23Ni13 Stainless Steel Electrode for All-Position Welding.
A rutile-coated electrode for welding stainless steel, dissimilar steels, and high alloy steels with excellent crack resistance and oxidation resistance in all positions.
Product Overview
AK-E309-16 is a Cr23Ni13 stainless steel electrode with a rutile coating, designed for manual metal arc welding. It is suitable for AC and DC operation and supports all-position welding, including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead joints.
The electrode delivers good weld metal performance with high crack resistance and oxidation resistance, making it appropriate for critical applications involving stainless steel, stainless steel linings, and dissimilar steel joints such as Cr19Ni10 and low carbon steel.
Application: It is suitable for welding the same type of stainless steel, stainless steel lining, dissimilar steel (such as Cr19Ni10 and low carbon steel, etc.), as well as high chromium steel, high manganese steel, etc.
Key Benefits
All-Position Welding Capability
AK-E309-16 can be used in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, allowing consistent weld quality across complex joint geometries without changing consumables.
Excellent Crack Resistance
The deposited metal exhibits strong resistance to solidification and hot cracking, which is essential when welding high-alloy or dissimilar materials.
Good Oxidation Resistance
The weld metal maintains its integrity in high-temperature environments due to its high chromium and nickel content, suitable for service in aggressive or elevated-temperature conditions.
Stable Arc with Rutile Coating.
The rutile coating ensures a stable arc across a wide current range, reducing spatter and improving weld pool control during all-position welding.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of Cr23Ni13 stainless steel and similar grades.
- Stainless steel linings in pressure vessels and piping.
- Dissimilar welding between Cr19Ni10 stainless steel and low carbon steel.
- Welding of high chromium and high manganese steels.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors stocking stainless steel electrodes for industrial applications.
- Fabricators working with stainless steel and dissimilar metal joints.
- Maintenance teams handling high-alloy steel repairs in petrochemical and power plant environments.
Problems It Solves
- Cracking in welds when joining stainless steel or dissimilar steels with insufficient crack resistance in the filler metal.
- Oxidation and degradation of welds in high-temperature service due to inadequate alloy content in the deposited metal.
- Need for multiple electrode types to cover different welding positions on the same joint.

Use Guide
- Select diameter by joint thickness and set current within the published range: 2.5 mm runs 60–80 A flat/horizontal and 40–70 A vertical/overhead, 3.2 mm runs 80–120 A flat/horizontal and 60–100 A vertical/overhead, 4.0 mm runs 100–150 A flat/horizontal and 80–130 A vertical/overhead.
- Clean the base metal surface from oil, grease, rust, and scale before welding to ensure proper fusion and avoid contamination.
- Store electrodes in sealed packaging and re-dry if exposed to moisture before use.
- Remove slag completely between passes to prevent inclusions and ensure sound weld metal.
How It Compares
AK-E309-16 and E308-16 both weld stainless steel, but E309-16 has higher nickel and chromium content, making it better suited for dissimilar welding and improved resistance to solidification cracking. E308-16 is typically used for matching stainless steel joints only. Basic-coated electrodes offer higher toughness but require strict drying and are more sensitive to contamination. AK-E309-16’s rutile coating provides easier arc starting and better slag control, especially in overhead positions.
