AK-E2209-16 Ultra-Low Carbon Duplex Stainless Steel Electrode.
A rutile-coated electrode for welding 22% chromium duplex stainless steels with balanced ferrite content, excellent corrosion resistance, and stable performance on AC or DC.
Product Overview
AK-E2209-16 is an ultra-low carbon stainless steel electrode with a rutile coating, designed for manual metal arc welding of duplex stainless steels. The deposited metal contains approximately 40% ferrite, combining the strength of ferritic stainless steel with the ductility and corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steel.
It meets the EN ISO 3581-A: E (22 9 3 N L)R 32, AWS A5.4 E2209-16, and GB/T 983 E2209-16 classifications. The electrode delivers excellent resistance to pitting and stress corrosion, with good operability, low porosity, and consistent weld quality across all positions.
Application: lt is suitable for welding of 22%Cr dupl ex stainless steels such as 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N (SUS2205 ) and S31803 corresponding to the petrochemical industry.
Key Benefits
Balanced Ferrite Content in Deposited Metal.
The deposited metal contains about 40% ferrite, which provides a balanced combination of strength and toughness, suitable for demanding service environments.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
The electrode produces weld metal with high resistance to pitting and stress corrosion, making it suitable for use in aggressive environments such as petrochemical processing.
Good Welding Process Performance.
The rutile coating ensures stable arc starting and good slag coverage, with low spatter and easy slag removal, even at lower current levels.
Versatile Power Source Compatibility.
The electrode can be used with both AC and DC power sources, offering flexibility in field and shop welding applications.
Where It Is Used
- Welding of 22% Cr duplex stainless steels such as 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N (SUS2205) and S31803.
- Petrochemical industry components exposed to corrosive media.
- Fabrication and repair of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems.
Who It Is For
- Welding consumable distributors supplying duplex stainless steel electrodes.
- Petrochemical and refinery maintenance teams requiring corrosion-resistant welds.
- Fabricators working with duplex stainless steel in aggressive service environments.
Problems It Solves
- Matching filler metal chemistry to duplex stainless steels like 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N and S31803 to ensure weld metal meets code requirements for corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
- Sourcing a single electrode that delivers consistent performance across AC and DC, with good slag control and low porosity.
- Achieving reliable welds in duplex stainless steel without excessive post-weld cleaning or rework due to poor bead profile or slag entrapment.

- Store electrodes in sealed packaging; re-dry if exposed to humidity before use.
- Remove slag completely between passes to avoid inclusions and ensure full corrosion resistance.
How It Compares
AK-E2209-16 and E2209-16 both refer to the same electrode classification, but AK-E2209-16 is the specific product designation from AKWELD. It is a rutile-coated electrode with ultra-low carbon content, suitable for duplex stainless steel welding. Basic-coated electrodes may offer higher strength but require stricter drying and are more sensitive to contamination. Cellulosic electrodes provide deeper penetration but are less suitable for corrosion-critical applications. For duplex stainless steel, matching the ferrite content and low carbon level is essential to maintain corrosion resistance.
