A torsion spring stores energy when its legs are rotated around the coil axis and returns it as torque. Torsion springs fail on the leg, not the body. Legs that are the wrong length, bent to the wrong plane or left with a sharp transition at the last coil crack in service and jam the mechanism they sit in. Programmed coiling keeps the leg angle and the body diameter repeatable from the first piece to the last.

The spring should be wound so that the working load closes the coils rather than opening them. If you are unsure, tell us which way the arm travels in your assembly and we will specify the handedness.
