A balance torsion spring in carbon steel, made to counter the weight of a moving part so that it stays wherever it is put. Balance applications are defined by torque curve rather than by peak force, which makes them a design exercise rather than a catalogue pick.
The spring is sized so its torque tracks the changing moment of your mechanism across its travel, not just at one position.
Balance springs are often large. Carbon steel with an appropriate plating delivers the torque without the price of an alloy.
Balance springs cannot be bought off a shelf because they depend on the arm length and mass of your specific part.
Install with the spring preloaded to the angle agreed at design, not at its free angle. Balance springs are almost always fitted with an initial wind, and skipping it moves the balance point.
Covers that slam shut or drift open because the counterbalance was approximated rather than calculated
Off-the-shelf springs that balance at one position and fight the mechanism everywhere else
Dimensional and load figures are set per order against your drawing or sample, so they are marked TBC rather than filled with catalogue numbers.

Where a gas strut would normally be used, a balance torsion spring has no seals to fail and no gas to leak, at the cost of a less adjustable force and a bulkier pivot.
The mass being balanced, the arm length, the pivot position and the angular travel. With those four figures the required torque curve is straightforward.
Often yes, though a long travel may need the spring preloaded at the rest position. We confirm this during design.
Only when plated, and even then galvanising or dacromet should be specified. For permanently exposed mechanisms stainless is the better base material.
Send your drawing, dimensions or a sample. We will confirm the specification and come back with a price and a lead time.
