A custom torsion spring in spring steel with a black coating, made to drawing for industrial mechanisms where the spring should not reflect light. The coating is heavier build than black oxide, which gives some corrosion protection alongside the matt appearance.
Useful in optical, display and camera-adjacent assemblies where a bright spring would throw light into the mechanism.
Black coating gives more corrosion resistance than black oxide alone, while keeping the same matt look.
Body, coil count and legs are produced to your dimensions rather than selected from a standard range.
Avoid dragging the coated spring across sharp edges during assembly. The finish is a surface layer and exposed steel at a scratch will be the first place corrosion starts.

Every batch follows the same seven step route, with tensile testing and magnetic powder flaw detection carried out before packing.

Against the zinc plated equivalent, the black coated version trades a measure of corrosion protection for a matt non-reflective surface. Where appearance is irrelevant, zinc is the better value.
Black coating is a thicker applied layer with more corrosion protection. Black oxide is a conversion of the surface itself and is thinner.
Coating adhesion at leg roots is checked at sampling, since that is where flexing is greatest.
It is better than oxide but still not an outdoor finish. Galvanising or dacromet should be specified for exposed positions.
