A torsion spring wound from nitinol, a nickel titanium alloy that recovers from strains which would permanently deform steel and can be designed to change behaviour with temperature. It is a specialist part specified where a conventional spring steel design has already been ruled out.
Nitinol returns to shape after deflections that would take a permanent set in carbon or stainless steel wire.
Shape memory alloys can be specified to change stiffness or geometry across a transition temperature, which opens designs that are impossible in steel.
Nitinol resists corrosion without plating, removing the coating as a failure point in demanding environments.
Keep the working temperature within the range agreed at design. Nitinol's advantage comes from its transition behaviour, and operating outside that band gives unpredictable force.
Steel springs taking a permanent set in mechanisms that deflect far beyond normal spring travel
Plated springs failing where the coating is the weak link rather than the base metal
Dimensional and load figures are set per order against your drawing or sample, so they are marked TBC rather than filled with catalogue numbers.

Against a stainless torsion spring, nitinol tolerates far greater deflection and costs substantially more. The decision is almost always driven by required strain, not by corrosion.
When the design needs elastic recovery beyond what steel allows, or genuinely needs temperature dependent behaviour. For ordinary springs it is an expensive way to buy no advantage.
Transition behaviour depends on alloy composition and processing. Tell us the temperature range your application needs and we will confirm what is feasible before quoting.
Normally no. The alloy's own corrosion resistance is the reason it is often chosen.
Send your drawing, dimensions or a sample. We will confirm the specification and come back with a price and a lead time.
