What This Machine Does
This threading machine family taps holes on an articulated arm instead of on a drill press table, so the tap comes to the workpiece rather than the workpiece being lifted onto a machine. The SRAM12 and SRAM12W are air driven and tap M3 to M12 at spindle speeds of 0 to 400 r/min within a 900 mm working radius. The electric models run on 220 V: SRM-M16 and SRM-M16W tap M3 to M16 at 0 to 300 r/min on 600 W over a 1000 mm radius, SRM-M24 and SRM-M24W tap M6 to M24 at 0 to 200 r/min on 1000 W over 1200 mm, and SRM-M42 and SRM-M42W tap M16 to M24 on 1200 W over 1300 mm. The W versions work in any direction, so threads can be cut horizontally or overhead in a fixture or on a welded frame, while the standard versions tap downward. Net weights run from 18 kg on the pneumatic head to 110 kg on the largest electric unit.
Why Buyers Choose This Machine
- Articulated arm brings the tap to fixtures welded frames and parts too large to carry to a drill press
- W versions tap in any direction so horizontal and overhead threads do not need the part reclamped
- Arm keeps the tap square to the face which is what stops broken taps and drunken threads
- Four capacity steps from M3 to M24 let you buy the arm that matches the threads you actually cut
- Pneumatic SRAM12 needs only shop air at 8 to 10 kg so it suits lines with no spare 220 V outlet
- Adjustable spindle speed from 0 r/min gives control on small taps and on tough material
- Working radius from 900 mm to 1300 mm covers a bench cell without moving the machine
Where Pneumatic and Electric Threading Machine SRAM12 Earns Its Place
Problems It Solves
- Hand tapping large parts is slow and breaks taps when the tap is not held square
- Parts too heavy or too large to lift onto a drill press otherwise have to be tapped by hand
- Threads on vertical or overhead faces need the part reclamped on a fixed machine
- Inconsistent feed by hand produces torn threads that fail gauge checks
- A full drilling machine is an expensive way to cut a few hundred threads a shift
Who It Is For
- Steel fabrication shops that drill and tap their own frames and brackets
- Sheet metal and enclosure makers tapping mounting holes after welding
- Machine builders and maintenance departments tapping assemblies in place
- Distributors supplying workshop tapping equipment in export markets
Application Scenarios
- Tapping mounting holes in welded steel frames and fabricated bases that cannot be lifted onto a drill press
- Batch tapping of flange and cover plates on a bench cell
- Overhead and horizontal tapping inside machine enclosures using a W model
- In-line tapping on a fabrication line where an air supply is available but a machine tool is not
- Repair tapping of large castings and housings in a maintenance shop

How It Is Built and What Can Be Changed
Operations Performed
- Tapping
- Thread cutting
Quality Control
- Spindle run-out checked on the assembled tapping head
- Arm movement and counterbalance checked through the full working radius
- Air circuit leak tested on pneumatic models and insulation tested on electric models
- Test tapping run at the rated capacity before packing
Customisation Options
- Model selected by the largest thread you cut and the reach you need at the bench
- Pneumatic or 220 V electric drive depending on the services available at the station
- Standard or W version depending on whether you tap downward only or in any direction
- Tap holders and collets specified for your thread sizes
- Operating language and manual prepared for your market
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| Hand tapping with a wrench | The arm holds the tap square and drives it under power so threads come out straight and taps survive; hand tapping depends on the operator and breaks taps in deep holes |
|---|---|
| Tapping on a pillar drilling machine | The drill press is more rigid but the part has to come to it; the arm goes to parts that are welded fixed or too heavy to lift |
| Gear type tapping machine SB6516 / SB6532 | The gear machine is a fixed column machine for repeat bench work up to M32; the arm machine trades that rigidity for reach and any-direction working |
Running the Machine
Step 1
Mount the arm base to a bench a column or a mobile stand within reach of the work
Step 2
Connect clean dry air at 8 to 10 kg on pneumatic models or a 220 V supply on electric models
Step 3
Fit the tap in a holder sized for the thread and check it runs true
Step 4
Set the spindle speed down for larger threads and tougher material
Step 5
Bring the head to the hole square to the face and start the tap under light pressure
Step 6
Reverse the spindle to withdraw the tap and clear chips before the next hole
Step 7
Keep the arm joints lubricated so the head stays balanced at full reach

What is the difference between SRM-M24 and SRM-M24W?
Work direction. The plain model taps downward; the W model is rated to tap in any direction so you can thread vertical faces and overhead holes. Capacity speed and power are the same.
Do I need an air compressor?
Only for SRAM12 and SRAM12W which run on 8 to 10 kg air pressure. The SRM models are 220 V electric and need no compressed air.
What is the largest thread these machines tap?
M24 on SRM-M24 SRM-M24W SRM-M42 and SRM-M42W. SRM-M16 goes to M16 and the pneumatic SRAM12 to M12. Send us your thread sizes and material and we will confirm the model.
Can the machine be supplied for 110 V or 380 V?
The electric models are listed at 220 V. Tell us the supply voltage and frequency in your market and we will confirm what can be arranged before the order.
Are taps and holders included?
Tap holders are specified against your thread range. Send us the thread sizes you cut most and we will quote the holder set with the machine.
How are the machines packed for export?
In wooden cases suited to the net weight of the model which runs from 18 kg up to 110 kg. We confirm case dimensions and gross weight on the proforma invoice.
What are your trade and payment terms?
We quote FOB CFR and CIF. Payment is 30 percent by T/T with the order and 70 percent before shipment, or an irrevocable L/C at sight.
