What This Machine Does
The 3M9740B grinds and mills the joint surface between cylinder body and cylinder cover on engines used in automobiles, tractors, tanks and ships. After long service that mating surface distorts, the engine stops running properly and no amount of gasket work will fix it until the surface is brought back flat. This machine restores the working accuracy of that face by grinding or milling it, and with an electromagnetic chuck fitted it will also grind the flat surfaces of other parts. The spindle runs on high precision bearings with the motor mounted at the back of the machine, which keeps spindle accuracy at high speed and takes the motor mass off the cutting end. Plastic guideways give steady flexible movement, and the work table feed is stepless. The machine is offered as 3M9740B*130 and 3M9740B*150, the two sizes covering different working lengths for larger blocks.
Why Buyers Choose This Machine
- Restores the block-to-head joint surface on engines that no longer seal or run properly
- Grinds and mills on one machine so light finishing and heavier stock removal are both covered
- High precision spindle bearings with a rear-mounted motor hold spindle accuracy at speed
- Plastic guideways give stable flexible table movement with low stick-slip
- Stepless work table feed lets the operator match feed to the material in front of them
- Two working lengths in the *130 and *150 versions cover different block sizes
- An electromagnetic chuck turns the machine into a general surface grinder for other parts
Where Cylinder Block Grinding & Milling Machine 3M9740 Earns Its Place
Problems It Solves
- A distorted block-to-cover surface keeps blowing gaskets no matter how the engine is assembled
- Large blocks will not fit on machines sized for car engines
- Fixed feed rates force the same speed on cast iron and on harder repair materials
- Shops with only a milling option struggle to get the finish a large gasket needs
- Scrapping a distorted heavy engine block costs far more than resurfacing it
Who It Is For
- Engine rebuild shops working on truck tractor and marine engines
- Plant and fleet workshops that recondition their own large blocks
- Machine shops offering large-block resurfacing as a service
- Distributors supplying heavy-engine rebuild workshops in export markets
Application Scenarios
- Resurfacing heavy truck and tractor cylinder blocks after long service
- Grinding cylinder cover faces on marine and stationary engines
- Milling a badly distorted block deck before a finishing grind
- Surface grinding other flat components using an electromagnetic chuck
- Batch block resurfacing in a rebuild line handling large engines

How It Compares With the Alternatives
| TSM850 cylinder head grinding and milling machine | The TSM850 is sized for head and general block faces; the 3M9740B is aimed at the larger truck tractor marine and industrial blocks |
|---|---|
| Replacing a distorted block | Grinding the joint surface restores working accuracy on a block that would otherwise be scrapped, which on a heavy engine is a large saving |
| Milling alone | Milling removes stock quickly but grinding on the same machine gives the surface finish needed for the joint to seal |
Running the Machine
Step 1
Clean the block or cover and check where the surface has distorted
Step 2
Clamp the part on the table or set it on the electromagnetic chuck for general work
Step 3
Choose milling where a lot of stock must come off and grinding for the finishing pass
Step 4
Set the stepless table feed to suit the material and the depth of cut
Step 5
Take a light pass first and confirm the cut is picking up across the whole face
Step 6
Work down until the surface cleans up then measure flatness
Step 7
Clean all abrasive and swarf from the part before assembly

Questions About Cylinder Block Grinding & Milling Machine 3M
What is the difference between 3M9740B*130 and *150?
The working length. Send us the longest cylinder block you resurface and we will confirm which of the two versions covers it.
What engines is this machine for?
It is mainly used on the joint surface between cylinder body and cylinder cover of engines in automobiles, tractors, tanks and ships.
Can it grind parts other than engine blocks?
Yes. With an electromagnetic chuck fitted it can grind the surfaces of other flat parts.
Why is the motor mounted at the back?
Mounting the motor at the rear of the machine keeps the spindle accuracy at high speed by keeping the motor mass away from the spindle nose.
What are the guideways made of?
The machine uses plastic guideways, which run stably and flexibly and reduce stick-slip on slow finishing passes.
How is it packed and shipped?
Machines are crated for sea freight. We quote FOB CFR or CIF against the port you nominate; tell us your destination port with your enquiry.
What are your payment terms?
30 percent by T/T on order and 70 percent before shipment, or an irrevocable L/C at sight.
