What Grain Size Actually Changes
For a fixed mass of media, halving the grain diameter multiplies the number of grains and therefore the number of impacts, while cutting the energy each one carries. Small grains give coverage and a fine finish. Large grains give energy and depth.

Working From The Part
- Fine finish or thin section. Start at the small end. Cast Stainless Steel Shot reaches 0.05 mm, the finest in the range.
- Flash and burr on a die casting. The grain has to reach the flash line and still carry enough mass to break it. Zinc Shot runs 0.4 mm to 3.5 mm.
- Peening a spring or gear. Size follows the intensity your specification calls for. Carbon Steel Cut Wire Shot Conditioned runs 0.2 mm to 2.5 mm.
- Heavy scale on plate. Go up in size and use an as-cut grain. Carbon Steel Cut Wire Shot As Cut runs 0.2 mm to 2.5 mm.
Prove It On The Part
Minimum order is 500 kg on most ranges, 1,000 kg on carbon steel cut wire shot. That is deliberately low enough to run a trial before committing a year of consumption to one size.
