Assembled Multi Port Board With USB Card Slot And Shielded Modules

An assembled control board on a blue solder mask carrying USB connectors, a card slot, several shielded modules and a routed outline with mounting bosses. Multi-port boards live in a chassis and every external connector on them is a mechanical interface.

Product overview

What This Board Is

This board is defined by its edges. USB shells, a card slot and further connectors all have to sit at the right height and the right distance from the board edge, because the chassis aperture has no tolerance to give. Everything inward of the edge is ordinary surface mount work. Everything at the edge is a mechanical fit problem solved in the bare board tolerances.

Key benefits

What You Get From This Build

  • Connector positions fixed by hole position tolerance of ±0.05 mm on the bare board
  • Routed outline and mounting bosses held to ±0.10 mm for chassis fit
  • Shielded modules placed and their ground connection inspected during assembly
  • Fabrication and assembly quoted and delivered as one finished unit
Who it is for

Who Specifies This Board

  • Set-top box, media and networking device manufacturers
  • Industrial gateway and edge device builders
  • Test equipment makers with front panel connectivity
  • Product owners moving a design from a contract assembler to a combined supplier
Problems it solves

Four Failures This Build Is Designed Against

Each one is a real way this class of board goes wrong, and the tolerance or process decision that prevents it.

Chassis fit

Connectors that do not align with the case aperture

Connector alignment is a bare board tolerance problem before it is an assembly problem. Hole position is held to ±0.05 mm and outline to ±0.10 mm.

Shield grounding

Shielded modules with an intermittent ground

Ground stitching under the shield is designed into the board and the joint is inspected at assembly.

Connector strength

USB shells that loosen after repeated insertion

Shell anchor holes are plated with a 0.025 mm wall so the mechanical load is carried by the barrel.

Mixed suppliers

A board built in one plant and assembled in another

Building both in one place removes the handover and the shipping leg between them.

Manufacturing process

How This Board Is Made

Eight stages on equipment sourced from the USA, Japan, Germany and Israel. Every stage listed runs inside our own plant.

Data and BOM review

Manufacturer part numbers checked and alternates agreed in writing before buying.

Bare board

Fabricated in the same plant and open and short tested at 50 to 300 V.

Stencil

Cut to the paste layer of the same released revision as the board.

Paste and placement

Solder paste printed, then surface mount devices placed.

Reflow

Profiled for the substrate, with flexible circuits carried flat in tooling.

Through-hole and manual

Connectors, magnetics and hand-fitted parts as separate operations with their own inspection.

Inspection

Assembled boards inspected before packing.

Packing

Packed on our own packing machines to your goods-in specification.

Quality control

What Is Checked Before It Ships

  • Bare board open and short tested at 50 to 300 V before any component is placed
  • Stencil and board matched to the same released revision
  • Post-reflow inspection before through-hole and manual operations
  • Mechanical parts such as sockets and terminal blocks inspected as mechanical parts
  • Functional test quoted and run against your own test specification
Certifications

What The Plant Holds

  • ISO 9001:2000. Quality management system certification recorded by the company. Current revision year available on request.
  • ISO 14001:1996. Environmental management system certification recorded by the company.
  • UL. Certification recorded by the company. File number available on request.
  • RoHS and lead free. Listed in the company environmental policy alongside pollution prevention and resource reduction.

Certificate numbers, issue dates and current revision years are not published on the legacy site. Ask for copies with your enquiry and they will be sent with the quotation.

What To Send With Your Enquiry

Four things that decide whether the quote comes back right the first time.

  1. Give the chassis drawing with connector heights and setbacks from the board edge.
  2. State the mounting boss positions relative to the routed outline rather than to a datum you have not shared.
  3. Mark which connector contacts must be masked through assembly.
  4. Give the packing specification your goods-in process requires.
Questions

Multi Port Control PCBA With USB And Card Slot Questions

Can you supply the board with the chassis already fitted?

Tell us what mechanical assembly you need. Enclosure work is quoted separately from the electrical build.

How do you protect connector contacts during assembly?

Contact areas are masked through the paste and reflow steps and checked before packing.

Which solder mask colour is standard?

Green is standard. This board uses blue, and other colours are available on request.

What packing do you use for assembled boards?

Tell us the packing specification your goods-in process requires and we will pack to it. We run packing machines in house.
