IP8000/8100 Electro Pneumatic Valve Positioner
The IP8000/8100 is an electro pneumatic valve positioner for rotary pneumatic actuators.

What This Model Does
The IP8000/8100 is an electro pneumatic valve positioner for rotary pneumatic actuators. It takes a DC 4 to 20 mA signal from a controller or DCS and drives the actuator to the position the signal requests. A mechanical feedback linkage reads actual valve stem position back into the positioner, so the control loop closes at the valve rather than in the control room. It is a form fit and function replacement for the SMC IP8000 and IP8100 series positioners already fitted on most quarter turn actuators.

Why Buyers Specify This Model
- Closes the position loop at the valve so packing friction and process load do not cause control error
- Improves response time between a signal change and actual valve movement
- Maintains position accuracy across the full stroke, even under varying process pressure
- Accepts split range signals with simple span adjustment, so one controller output can drive two valves
- Interchangeable with the IP6#00 series, so it drops into existing mounting brackets
- IP65 enclosure protection resists dust and water ingress in harsh plant environments
- Large pressure gauge for easy on-site reading of output air pressure
- Excellent shock and vibration performance for use in high-movement or high-vibration areas
Problems It Solves
- Valve position drifts under process pressure because the positioner lacks feedback
- Loop tuning fails because the valve does not respond quickly to signal changes
- Position accuracy is poor at the ends of the stroke due to lack of mechanical feedback
- Original brand positioner is on long lead time or discontinued for that actuator size
- Split range service requires two separate positioners, but only one controller output is available
Application Scenarios
- Rotary control valve on a gas pipeline where process pressure causes stem drift and poor positioning
- Valve in a high-vibration environment like a compressor station where the original positioner fails prematurely
- Split range service where one controller output drives a fail-safe and a fail-open valve
- Replacing a failed SMC IP8000 or IP8100 positioner without changing the actuator or bracket
- New skid build where the valve supplier ships the actuator without a positioner
Who It Is For
- Plant instrument technicians replacing worn SMC IP8000/IP8100 positioners on rotary valves
- Valve and actuator assemblers who fit positioners before shipment
- EPC contractors buying positioners in project quantities for a plant build
- Distributors stocking SMC pattern spares for local process plants
- OEMs who want the same positioner supplied under their own brand and colour
Technical Features
- Force balance operation between the input signal coil and the mechanical feedback linkage
- Mechanical valve position feedback taken directly from the actuator stem
- Accepts DC 4 to 20 mA input including split range calibration via span adjustment
- External zero and span adjustment for field calibration
- Single acting output for pneumatic rotary actuators
- Large pressure gauge for easy on-site reading of output air pressure
- Interchangeable mounting with IP6#00 series
- IP65 enclosure protection for dust and water resistance
- No resonances between 5 and 200 Hz for high vibration environments
- Remote position detection via output current (4-20 mA) when a transmitter module is fitted
Materials and Construction
- Cast aluminium alloy housing with painted finish
- Stainless steel feedback lever and spring components
- Full material and finish breakdown is given in the datasheet PDF

Manufacturing and Quality Control
Every unit is calibrated and stroke tested before it is packed. We can film or photograph your units in the sample room or warehouse before they ship.
Manufacturing Steps
Housing casting and machining
Coil and torque motor assembly
Pilot relay and nozzle flapper assembly
Zero and span calibration on an air bench
Signal sweep test across the 4 to 20 mA range
Painting in the customer colour and logo marking for OEM orders
Packing in stock or customised cartons
Quality Control
- Every unit is calibrated and stroke tested before packing
- Photos or video of the actual units can be taken in the sample room or warehouse before shipment
- Faulty units inside the 18 month warranty are replaced on photo or video evidence, not repaired
- Replacements normally ship with the customer next order, or immediately when the plant is down
Customisation Options
- Customer logo and nameplate marking
- Housing painted in the customer colour
- Newly designed shape modules developed to customer drawings
- Customised carton and inner packaging
- Supplied assembled with a limit switch box or position transmitter module
How It Compares With the Alternatives
| IP8000/8100 with no feedback | The IP8000/8100 uses mechanical feedback to close the loop at the valve; a basic converter only converts current to pressure without position correction |
|---|---|
| Pneumatic positioner without I/P conversion | The IP8000/8100 accepts a 4 to 20 mA electrical signal directly, so no separate I/P transducer is needed in front of it |
| Intelligent digital positioner | A digital positioner adds diagnostics and HART; the IP8000/8100 is the lower cost choice where the loop only needs position control |
| IP6#00 series | The IP8000/8100 is interchangeable with the IP6#00 series, but has improved enclosure protection and larger pressure gauge |
Fitting and Setting Up This Model
General field procedure. Always follow the datasheet for the exact calibration sequence and any hazardous area requirements.
Mount the positioner on the actuator yoke with the SMC IP8000/8100 pattern bracket and connect the feedback lever to the stem clamp
Set the feedback lever horizontal at 50 percent travel so the linkage stays linear across the stroke
Connect clean dry instrument air to the supply port and the actuator to the output port
Wire the DC 4 to 20 mA signal observing polarity
Stroke the valve at 4 mA and set zero, then at 20 mA and set span, and repeat until both ends hold
For split range service calibrate zero and span to the assigned half of the signal
Check the air filter regulator regularly; dirty air is the most common cause of positioner drift
IP8000/8100 Electro Pneumatic Valve Positioner FAQ
Will this fit the bracket already on my actuator?
If the actuator carries an SMC IP8000 or IP8100 positioner today, yes. Send a photo of the existing bracket and stem clamp over WhatsApp and we will confirm before you order.
What is the lead time?
Regular quantities normally ship in 2 to 3 days from stock. Large project quantities take 7 to 10 days.
Can I get it in our own colour with our logo?
Yes. The housing is painted to your colour and the nameplate carries your logo. Black, blue and yellow are already tooled; other colours are painted to order.
What is the difference between the IP8000 and IP8100?
The IP8000 is for linear actuators. The IP8100 is for rotary actuators. This model is the IP8100 for rotary applications.
What happens if a unit fails on site?
The warranty is 18 months. Send photos or a short video, and we ship a replacement unit rather than asking you to return it for repair. It normally travels with your next order, or on its own if the plant is down.
Do you supply the limit switch box and transmitter as one assembly?
Yes. The positioner can be supplied already assembled with a 210, 410A or 410B limit switch box, or with an internal or external position transmitter module.
Can I see the actual units before they ship?
Yes. Ask on WhatsApp and we will photograph or film the units in the sample room or warehouse before packing.
