ACP Material Guide Skins Cores Coatings And What Each One Decides

What an aluminum composite panel is made of, which layer controls which property, and how to write a specification that cannot be misread.

An aluminum composite panel is a sandwich: two metal skins, a core between them, and an adhesive film bonding the three together. Almost every question about ACP performance resolves to which of those layers you are asking about.

The skin decides handling and flatness

Standard skin thickness starts at 0.30 mm and is customizable upward. A heavier skin gives a flatter panel and better dent resistance; a lighter skin costs less and folds more easily. Our published test sample is a 4 mm panel with 0.30 mm skins.

  • Aluminum alloy coil, chemosynthesis pre-treated before coating
  • Stainless steel and copper skins available as metal composite panel
  • Skin thickness above 0.30 mm on request

The core decides fire class and weight

  • Polyethylene core — B2 under GB 8624, normal flammable, interior decoration only
  • Flame-retardant polyethylene core — B1, does not ignite easily, slow flame spread
  • Mineral core of aluminium hydroxide and fillers — A2, practically non-combustible, roughly 50% heavier
  • Aluminium lattice core — high rigidity at low weight, for long spans

The coating decides service life

The surface system is what stands between the panel and twenty years of ultraviolet light, rain and airborne dirt.

CoatingTypical warrantyPosition
PVDF (Kynar 500-based)15–20 yearsExterior facades and curtain walls
FEVE (Lumiflon-based)25+ yearsCoastal, industrial and signature buildings
HDPE10 yearsMatte interiors, retail and lift interiors
PE (polyester)5–10 yearsInterior decoration, short-term outdoor signage

The bond decides whether any of it matters

Peel strength is the single number that shows whether the lamination is sound. The specification is ≥ 7.0 N/mm at 180°; our measured result is 11.2 N/mm. Bending strength is specified at ≥ 100 MPa and measured at 121 MPa.

Writing a specification that cannot be misread

  • Total thickness and skin thickness, stated separately — 4 mm / 0.30 mm, not just 4 mm
  • Core class by standard, not by adjective — GB 8624 B1, not fireproof
  • Coating system and film thickness — PVDF, ≥ 25 μm
  • Colour by signed sample or RAL / Pantone reference, with the tolerance stated
  • Panel sizes from the elevation, with grain direction where the finish is directional
  • Packing: nude on pallet, or wooden-pallet packing with corner protection
