How to Import Stenter Spare Parts From China

Start With the Part Not the Paperwork

The usual first email asks for a quotation on a part number that does not exist any more, for a machine whose documentation went missing two owners ago. That email is hard to answer.

What works is a photograph. One photo of the part on the machine, with a ruler laid across the mounting holes, tells a parts maker more than a part number does. It shows the mounting, the wear pattern and the scale at once. If the part can be removed, posting one sample is better still.

Prove the Fit Before the Batch

For anything unusual, ask for one sample part before the production run. A good supplier will offer this without being asked, because arguing about a batch that does not fit is worse for them than making one part twice.

Fit the sample, run the machine, then release the batch. The delay is a few weeks. The alternative is a container of parts that seat wrong, which is a delay of months plus the freight both ways.

Understand What a Lead Time Means

A 7 day delivery on standard lines means the goods leave the factory within 7 days of order confirmation. It does not include the sea freight, and it does not include customs at your end.

Plan a shutdown around the arrival date, not the dispatch date, and ask the supplier to confirm both. Parts matched to a sample take longer than standard lines and should be quoted with their own date rather than folded into the standard one.

Consolidate Shipments

Most finishing mills of any size run three or four stenter brands. Buying each brand's parts from its own agent means four shipments, four sets of documents and four lots of freight on partial loads.

A supplier who covers Monforts, Bruckner, Artos, LK, IL SUNG, Stentex, Krantz, EHWHA, ALKAN, Unitech and ACC lets you put the whole annual parts requirement on one purchase order and one consignment. On a rail rebuild the freight saving alone is usually worth more than the unit price difference on any single part.

Ask About Matched Sets

This is the question that separates suppliers who understand stenters from suppliers who understand metalwork. Parts that grip fabric have to be consistent along the rail.

Pin plates from different batches give uneven pin height. Brush wheels from different batches give uneven bristle density. Ask whether your order will be packed as matched sets from one production batch, and ask whether the chain will be packed by rail side so the two sides do not get mixed on site.

Build a Coded Parts List

The real win from a China parts supplier comes on the second order, not the first. Once a pattern has been identified and produced, it is on file.

Ask your supplier to give you a coded parts list covering every machine on your floor, so reorders quote off the code and nobody has to re-identify anything. That is what turns an emergency purchase into a planned one.
