Stenter machines split into clip stenters and pin stenters. A clip starts open, the knife closes on the cloth as it enters, the fabric is held tightly through the chambers, and the clip opens again at the end of the machine. The advantage is that the edges of the cloth stay relatively flat, which suits thicker fabrics. The limit is that a clip needs a definite edge to grip, preferably a selvedge, so clip rails are usually confined to woven fabrics.

How does a stenter clip actually work?
The clip starts open. When the cloth enters, the knife of the clip closes and holds the cloth tightly. At the end of the machine the clip opens again.
Clips or pins, which should I use?
Clips keep the cloth edge relatively flat and suit thicker fabrics, but they need a definite edge to grip and are usually confined to wovens. Pins take higher tension and let the cloth run faster, at the cost of pinholes in the selvedge.
