Pan Framing Head Phillips Self-Tapping Screws
Sharp-point pan framing screw with a low head for light steel framing work.

Pan framing screws exist because a standard pan head is too tall for stud framing. The profile is flattened so the head sits close to the steel and the board that follows does not rock on it. Multiply that by every stud-to-track junction on a partition run and the head height stops being a detail.
This is the sharp-point version. It forms its own thread in pre-punched track or in thin gauge steel where a drill point is unnecessary, and it does so faster than a drill point because there is no hole to cut first.
Why buyers choose it
- Low head profile keeps the board line flat over every framing connection
- Sharp point starts fast in thin gauge steel and pre-punched track
- Phillips drive suits the collated and magazine drivers used in framing
- Carbon steel or stainless steel with a full plating range
Send the hole size already in the part, the substrate thickness and the head style and the size will be confirmed against the closest standard before quoting. Samples of this item are free of charge.

Problems this screw solves
Tall heads telegraph through board
A pan framing head is flattened specifically so the board sits flat. A standard pan head does not.
Drill points are wasted on thin gauge
In 0.5 mm steel a sharp point pierces and taps faster than a drill point cuts. Use the drill point version only when the steel warrants it.
Inconsistent head height ruins the line
Head height is a controlled dimension on this part, checked rather than left to the heading tool.
Where it is used
- Stud-to-track connections in light-gauge steel partitions
- Fixing framing accessories and bracing straps to studs
- Sheet-to-sheet fixing where the substrate is too thin to drill
- Assembling suspended ceiling grid framing components
Who buys it
Drywall and partition contractors, light steel frame fabricators, and distributors supplying framing consumables alongside board.
Quality control priorities
Head height and underhead flatness are the controlled dimensions on a framing screw, and both are gauged through the run. Point sharpness is checked on samples, because a blunt point in thin gauge pushes the sheets apart instead of piercing.
Customisation
Non-standard lengths are quoted on the same terms as standard lengths. Where screws are used in a collated magazine driver, say so at enquiry stage: collation affects head and shank tolerance more than the free-running specification does.
How it compares
Against the pan framing drill-point version
Same head, different point. Sharp point for thin gauge and pre-punched holes; drill point for solid steel.
Against a modified truss head screw
The truss head is wider and bears better on soft material; the framing head is lower and better under board.
Against a wafer head screw
Similar intent, different head geometry. Specify by head height and diameter if the board system sets a limit.
Installation notes
Do not over-torque in thin steel
The thread is formed in perhaps half a millimetre of material. Set a clutch and stop at seating.
Use the correct Phillips size
A PH2 bit in a PH1 recess will chew it on the first screw.
Keep the driver square
Angled driving in thin gauge tears the formed thread rather than stripping it cleanly.
Select stainless for humid plant rooms
Carbon steel with plating is the normal specification; stainless is the answer where humidity is constant.
