Oval Head Phillips Window Self-Tapping Screws

An oval head sits proud of the surface with a rounded crown rather than a flat disc, which is why it became the standard head for window and door frame hardware: it seats into a countersunk hole in the frame profile without the sharp edge of a flat head and without the height of a pan head fouling the sash. The Phillips recess keeps the driver self-centring during hand assembly on a glazing bench.
These are sharp-point tapping screws, so they form their own thread in a pre-punched or pre-drilled hole in the aluminium or UPVC profile. The screw does not need a nut behind it, which is what makes a hollow extrusion practical to assemble at all.

Flat heads bite into soft profile
A countersunk flat head concentrates load on a thin edge and can cut into a UPVC profile as it seats. The oval crown spreads the seating load over a larger radius.
Nuts are impossible inside an extrusion
A hollow frame section gives no access for a nut. A tapping screw forms its thread in the profile wall itself, so the joint is made from one side.
Visible fixings look unfinished
On a frame the screw head is often in the sightline. The oval crown reads as hardware rather than as a construction fixing, particularly in clear or blue zinc.

Against a pan head

A flat head finishes flush but cuts into soft material. The oval head is the compromise where the substrate is thin or plastic.
Against a self-drilling version
These need a prepared hole. Where the frame is steel reinforced and no hole exists, a drill point screw from the self-drilling family is the correct part.
Installation notes
Prepare the hole
Match the pilot hole to the screw core diameter, not to the outside diameter. Too large and the thread has nothing to form into; too small and the profile splits.
Set the driver
Use a depth stop or a clutch setting. An oval head does not bottom out the way a flat head does, so a torque limit is what stops over-seating.
Match finish to exposure
Clear and blue zinc for interior frames; stainless steel where the fixing is on the weather face.
