Hexagonal Head Torx Recess Wood Screw
Combined external hexagon and Torx drive timber screw for heavy structural fixings.
This screw carries two drives at once: an external hexagon for a socket and a Torx recess sunk into the head for a bit. That sounds like belt and braces until you install a long timber screw overhead, where a socket is awkward and a Torx bit holds the screw on the end of an extension. Having both means the same fastener works on a bench and in a roof void.
The Torx recess is the reason this style exists for long screws. A Phillips recess is designed to cam out, which protects the screw head on a hand screwdriver but destroys it under the sustained torque a 200 mm screw needs in dense timber. A Torx socket transmits torque through flat walls and simply does not slip.

Problems this screw solves
Phillips heads round out on long screws
Cam-out is a design feature of Phillips, not a defect. On a screw that needs thirty seconds of continuous drive it becomes a failure mode. The Torx recess removes it.
Overhead work makes a socket impractical
A socket does not retain the screw. The Torx recess with a magnetic bit holds the screw on the end of the driver so the other hand is free.
External timber corrodes plated screws
Clear zinc is not an external finish. Hot dip galvanising and the multi-layer systems on the finish list are what survives a deck.

Quality control priorities
Recess geometry is the critical dimension on this part. Torx socket depth and lobe form are gauged on samples through each run, because a shallow socket will strip a bit before the screw is seated. Head-to-shank concentricity is checked with the hexagon.
Customisation
Length is the variable that changes most between timber systems. Non-standard lengths are quoted on the same terms as catalogue lengths, and thread length can be set to leave a plain shank where a clamping effect is wanted between two members.
How it compares
Against the countersunk Torx wood screw
The hexagon head bears on the surface and is removable with a socket; the countersunk version pulls flush and disappears. Choose by whether a proud head is acceptable.
Against a coach screw
Functionally similar, but the Torx recess here adds a second drive route that a plain coach screw does not offer.
Against a self-drilling timber screw
No drill point here, so dense hardwood needs a pilot hole. In softwood the sharp point starts without one.

Pilot in dense timber
Hardwood and glulam need a pilot at core diameter. Softwood usually does not.
Use the right Torx size
An undersized bit is the most common cause of a stripped recess. Confirm the size against the sample rather than guessing from the head diameter.
Leave the head proud where it bears
Sinking a hexagon head into timber crushes fibres under the flange and loses clamping force.
Specify HDG for exposure
Any screw that will see rain or ground contact should be specified hot dip galvanised at order stage.
