Hexagonal Head Wood Screw
External hexagon timber screw for socket driving where high torque is needed.
Where the fixing is structural and the head can stand proud, an external hexagon is still the most robust drive there is. There is no recess to strip, the socket engages six flats, and a long screw can be run in with a rattle gun without any risk to the head.
This is the fastener used to pull steel brackets, joist hangers and timber connectors down onto a member. The bearing face under the hexagon is what does the clamping, so the head is meant to remain visible rather than to sink.

There is no recess here. The drive is on the outside of the head and cannot be destroyed by an oversized bit.

Partial threading with a defined plain shank length is the usual special. The plain shank lets the screw draw a bracket tight instead of threading through both parts, and the shank length can be set to the bracket thickness.

Against the hexagon head with Torx recess
That version adds a bit-driven option for overhead and confined work. This one is the simpler and cheaper part where a socket is always available.
Against the countersunk Torx wood screw
Different job entirely: countersunk disappears into the timber, hexagon clamps something onto it.
Against a bolt through the member
A through bolt is stronger but needs access to both faces and a hole right through. The screw works from one side.
Installation notes
Pilot in hardwood
Pilot at core diameter in dense timber; softwood usually takes the screw without one.
Do not crush the timber
Stop when the bracket is tight. Continuing to drive pulls the head into the plate and crushes the fibres beneath it.
Use a socket, not a spanner
A deep socket on a rattle gun gives a controlled drive; a spanner encourages part-turns and side load.
Specify HDG for anything outdoors
Fences, gates and ground-adjacent timber need hot dip galvanising, not clear zinc.
