Two things kill needles and sinkers on a circular machine, dry running and lint. A lubricator meters knitting oil to the needle bed and cam box at a set rate through distribution tubing and nozzles. A blower or fan cleaner sweeps lint away from the needle line and the yarn path before it packs into the tricks.
Oil rate is set low and steady on purpose. Too little and the needles run dry, too much and the oil goes into the fabric and has to be washed out.
