Every metre of yarn on a knitting machine slides over guide surfaces. A ceramic eyelet or guide gives a hard, smooth, low friction path so the yarn keeps its twist and its lubrication, and so the guide itself does not wear a groove that later cuts the yarn.
Zirconia and alumina ceramic guides are used where yarn speed and abrasion are highest. Metal guides, brackets and holders position the ceramic parts and hold the yarn path in line between creel, storage feeder and feeder finger.

Yarn Guides Questions
Why use ceramic instead of a metal eyelet?
Ceramic is far harder than the yarn running over it, so the surface stays smooth for much longer. A metal eyelet grooves, and once a groove has a sharp edge it starts to cut filaments.
How do I know a guide needs changing?
Run a fingernail or a piece of yarn through the bore. If it catches, the guide is grooved. Guides are usually replaced as a set across a feeder row so tension stays even.
Can you match a guide from a photo only?
Often yes, if the photo shows the part beside a ruler and you tell us the machine and the position. Bore diameter and mounting form are what we need to confirm.
